Lincoln

Offer description

Subject to formal establishment, a vacancy may arise for a Flt Lt, MAcr, WO or FS (Any Profession; however, preference will be given to Flt Lt Engineer (AS) or WO/FS Engineering TG1 (Any)) to serve as an ASIT Investigator at RAFC Cranwell on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 28 September 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status and formal establishment). The RAFSC ASIT is a group of geographically dispersed Officers and SNCOs who provide a full-time impartial investigation capability into human-factor centric air and HS&EP safety incidents. This is done by carrying out Non-Statutory Inquiries (NSIs), predominantly in the form of Occurrence Safety Investigations (OSI), and making recommendations to Duty Holders/Accountable Managers to mitigate or prevent recurrence across the Air TLB. As an investigator, you will establish the facts behind an incident through the gathering of data and work with individuals involved to determine the sequence of events, understand the decision-making process and the human factors influential to the event, and propose suitable recommendations to prevent or mitigate recurrence. This role requires regular interviews and discussions with RAF personnel of all trades/branches as well as civil servants, contractors, and occasionally Army and Navy personnel. Applicants must be comfortable engaging with a wide range of personnel, possess excellent people skills and emotional intelligence. In addition they must have strong analytical and report writing capabilities, and confidence presenting findings to a reviewing panel. The role will further require engagement with RAF units to promote AP8000 investigation policy and good practice. Specific tasks include: Investigating human factor centric safety incidents to determine causes and causal factors, and the production of SMART recommendations. Providing subject matter expertise for investigations across the Air(TLB). Production of high quality reports and presentations to Duty Holders and their representatives. Provision of refresher training and mentoring of part-time/inexperienced Station investigators, including policy promotion with RAF Duty Holder Safety Teams. Participating in Occurrence Review Groups. Providing Error Management and Human Factors advice and training. Conducting peer reviews on fellow investigators’ reports. Conducting annual reporting officer duties for select members of the ASIT. The ASIT workforce is predominantly comprised of Aircrew, Ops, ATC and Engineers who are able to conduct investigations across all domains regardless of their individual SQEP. Personnel from such backgrounds as well as those who have had exposure to HS&EP safety management systems are encouraged to apply. In addition the team may be required to support the Army and Royal Navy from time to time. As such applicants from other services are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be provided with the opportunity to gain a high standard of investigator training and the potential to achieve a post graduate qualification from a prominent UK institution (PGCert). This role requires regular travel nationwide, often at short notice, and occasionally overseas. It is parented by RAF Cranwell, however it is supported by a flexible remote working policy together with variable start and finish times, underpinned by regular visits to the team HQ at RAF Cranwell. TCoS may be open to negotiation depending on the needs of the Service and individual.
