Job overview

You will join our senior clinical leadership team and be a champion of this dynamic portfolio whilst having the skills to engage colleagues across the organisation in meaningful safeguarding activity.

The Head of Safeguarding will lead the provision of safeguarding services including mental health, learning disability, autism and dementia specialist services and have the ability to deliver the strategies for each of these areas.

The successful candidate will have a strong safeguarding background and be a forward thinking, enthusiastic and motivated individual with a passion for learning and improving outcomes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Lead the Children’s, Maternity and Adults Safeguarding services providing leadership and direction to Named Professionals and safeguarding leads within the Trust.
2. Lead the Safeguarding Service across the organisation, working with key internal and external stakeholders to deliver a comprehensive and cohesive safe and effective safeguarding service for the Trust.
3. Provide professional leadership in the co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of all aspects of the safeguarding children and ‘adults at risk’ services.
4. To provide expert level of knowledge, leadership and professional advice in relation to safeguarding vulnerable children and adults at risk, using lessons learnt from national and local case reviews, best practice evidence and research.
5. Provide visible, accessible and authoritative presence within the Trust in regard to Safeguarding Children, MARAC, Domestic Abuse and Harmful Practices, Adults at Risk, Mental Capacity, Deprivation of Liberties, PREVENT, and Child Sexual Exploitation.
6. Ensure robust processes are in place to enable the Trust to participate in case reviews (Serious Case reviews, Safeguarding Adults Reviews, Practice Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews) from initial scoping, management review and analysis through to the development, implementation and monitoring of action plans.
7. To be responsible for implementation, maintenance and development of effective and efficient systems for the detection, prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of harm and abuse in partnership with multi-disciplinary Safeguarding teams.
8. To lead the Trust safeguarding meetings, ensuring the Trust safeguarding committee is fully informed about both agendas and issues arising from these.
9. To ensure all governance and risk associated with the Safeguarding agenda is identified and mitigation is in place to minimise risk.
10. To ensure compliance with the key performance indicators for the service.
11. Responsible for operational management of Safeguarding named and lead professionals.
12. A high degree of effective communication, networking and liaison will be required to establish and maintain good working relationships and networks within the health economy and other agencies.
13. To provide to and receive from others highly specialist, complex and highly sensitive information in relation to safeguarding vulnerable adults and children to senior managers, external agencies and staff within a variety of contexts and situations.
14. Be the responsible lead for learning disability, autism and mental health within the organisation.
15. Become a LeDer trained reviewer and work with the mortality and end of life care board and clinical leads to ensure care for mental health, autism and learning disabilities is delivered with a person centred approach.
16. Lead on a number of corporate areas of responsibility to be determined as organisational needs.

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria

17. Degree level qualification or equivalent
18. Leadership training / development

Desirable criteria

19. Masters qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent
20. Teaching Qualification
21. Post graduate Leadership Qualification or equivalent experience
22. Training in Safeguarding Adults and children supervision

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

23. Specialist knowledge of Safeguarding Adults and children
24. Knowledge of national / local Safeguarding Adults and children policies
25. Knowledge of evidence-based safeguarding adults and children’s practice
26. Proven track record of successful leadership roles
27. Ability to developing strategic direction for a team and / or service
28. Ability to write clear and concise reports, design, monitor and undertake audit.

Desirable criteria

29. Named Nurse Safeguarding Adults/Children experience
30. Experience of working with Learning Disability, autism and mental health patient groups
31. Expert knowledge of complexities of Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards and Mental capacity act.
