Specialist Biomedical Scientist

We have a wonderful opportunity for an experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic, supportive, and friendly team in the Clinical Biochemistry Department at Epsom and St Helier hospitals.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and motivated State Registered Biomedical Scientists to join the well-established team in this busy UKAS Accredited pathology department. Where Biomedical scientists within the department work on the Abbott Alinity Chemistry and Immunoassay analysers. In addition, with suitable training, the successful candidate may also have the opportunity to work with other specialist analysers including the Waters TQD and Agilent HPLC.

The post is for 37.5 hours per week, primarily based at St Helier Hospital; however rotation across other sites within SWLP may be required. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 24 hour/seven day service after a period of suitable training.


Main duties of the job

We are currently seeking to recruit a suitably qualified Band 6 BMS to join the Clinical Blood Sciences (CBS) team. Working primarily in the Automated Biochemistry Department, the successful candidate may also be required to work across the other specialist sections in biochemistry, following suitable training. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment that offers continual growth and the chance to expand your knowledge, skills, and experience.The successful candidate will play a crucial role in all stages of the laboratory process, including; sample handling, analysis, and reporting, from assigning unique identifiers and performing routine and specialized biochemical analyses to validating and authorizing laboratory results.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, hard-working individual able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 24 hour/seven day service after a period of suitable training. You will also engage in professional development activities, such as participating in CPD to maintain HCPC registration, attending training courses, and contributing to the training of other staff and healthcare professionals. At the Epsom and St. Helier, Biomedical scientist in Biochemistry work in the new state of the art Automation laboratories providing Abbott Alinity Chemistry and Immunoassay analysers connected to the latest GLP systems. Additionally, St Helier hospital has a number of specialist sections, including HPLC for Biogenic amines, Specialist TDM analysis and Amino Acids. We are also home to the South West Thames regional Newborn Screening Laboratory providing population screening to the newborns in the South West Thames catchment area.

The Laboratory operates a 24/7 service (with multidisciplinary out of hours) providing cover to a busy A&E, obstetrics and acute services.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* An Honours degree or equivalent in a biological Science
* HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
* Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience


Knowledge and Experience

* Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
* Excellent working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Knowledge of health and safety issues
* Experience of quality management systems
* Experience in using Abbott Alinity / Beckman


Skills and Abilities

* Practical specialist analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work
* Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software
* Accuracy and attention to detail
* Able to follow written methodologies or protocols
* Able to work as part of a team
* Able to work under pressure
* Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work
* Intermediate level of computer skills
* Excellent communication and presentation skills
* Use of enhanced pathology computer systems


Other relevant

* Good hand eye co-ordination
* Able to perform light physical work.
* Capable of intense periods of concentration
