Role Overview: To utilize proven industry knowledge and technical insight, working alongside internal Power & Renewables stakeholders to support evidence-based underwriting decisions. You will play a key role in The Hartford’s aim to underwrite human achievement and be the Insurer of the Transition.
The role reports directly to the Chief Risk Engineer, Marine & Energy International, with daily operational activities under the guidance of Power & Renewables Underwriters. It involves close cooperation with the London-based Underwriting and Claims teams and regular liaison with the US Risk Engineering Team.
Job Responsibilities & Competencies
* Review and assess technical underwriting information from brokers and clients to inform Power & Renewables underwriters, primarily for Property Damage (Operational & Construction) and BI/DSU, including other coverages like Liability and Cyber.
* Enhance existing tools for risk appraisal in Power & Renewables, including exposure quantification and risk quality assessment.
* Support the Chief Risk Engineer in technology development, emerging risks analysis, and strategic risk engineering development.
* Assist claims professionals during claims management and support internal lessons learned processes.
* Utilize internal and third-party data to improve understanding of sector risks and causes of loss.
* Participate in client facility visits, contribute to market survey reports, and provide risk management services where appropriate.
* Share knowledge and liaise with Hartford Risk Engineering practitioners across business units.
* Collaborate with colleagues from actuarial, claims, data analysis, IT, and risk management to integrate risk engineering insights into decision-making processes.
* Engage in industry committees, conferences, and contribute articles on risk and insurance in Power & Renewables.
* Support colleagues' professional development through knowledge sharing, guidance, and coaching.
* Pursue ongoing professional development through training, education, and professional memberships.
Qualifications & Capabilities
* Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
* Understanding of general insurance principles.
* Deep knowledge of causes of losses in Power & Renewables.
* Willingness to expand knowledge in technical, reliability, operational safety, and insurance issues.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to work with various organizational levels.
* Ability to develop and maintain relationships internally and externally.
* Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
* Team player with the ability to work independently.
* Networking skills and flexibility for overseas and UK client surveys.
* High analytical and problem-solving skills.
