Due to continued growth within a number of our business areas, we have a requirement for additional Project Engineering Managers within the Integrated Sensing and Protection (ISP) Line of Business (LoB) within Leonardo Electronics UK.
Within this LoB, the projects are diverse and exciting. There are a large number of projects in various stages of their lifecycle from new core product development, business capture, customer-funded projects and in service support contracts. Within ISP, we work on a wide variety of technologies, but we are primarily looking to fill roles to lead our projects based around our Communications and CEMA products and systems.
The role of Project Engineering Lead is to manage the total engineering activity on a project or portfolio of projects, leading cross-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver solutions that meet customer technical requirements, contractual requirements, and legislative requirements. The Project Engineering Lead works with Project Managers and the Project Engineering Manager to plan and manage engineering effort from a performance, schedule and cost perspective. They contribute to the monthly engineering governance cycle, prepare engineering status reports, and ensure realistic resourcing plans are in place. They may also support business winning activities, coordinating engineering costs, and leading engineering bid reviews. A successful candidate will be self-motivated, proactive and enthusiastic, with strong leadership and communication skills, and will foster effective working relationships to achieve project goals. A strong product design, commercial and business awareness is essential to manage engineering effort in the appropriate context for each project.
Key Responsibility Areas
* Project Engineering Leads are responsible for the management of a multi-disciplined engineering team across multiple projects, delivering overall engineering output against time, cost and performance budgets.
* Generate clear and relevant engineering plans, establish key milestones, and identify risks, opportunities and interdependencies.
* Review current engineering positions on projects and adapt plans to mitigate risks to cost, schedule or performance budgets.
* Prepare and communicate monthly engineering status reports for assigned projects to the line manager, the Head of Engineering Projects.
* Coordinate engineering input into bids as part of the business winning process.
* Be part of the multi-functional management team for the IPT and may represent engineering in weekly and monthly progress and reporting meetings.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
The following skills and experience are required:
* Educated to a degree level in an engineering-related subject (essential)
* Previous experience of managing and/or leading multi-disciplined engineering teams (essential)
* Strong understanding and proven track record of engineering lifecycles and processes (essential)
* Experience of working on the development of hardware electronics, firmware and mechanical based products (Desirable)
* Experience of collaborating with external partners for a development (sharing of models, code etc) would be advantageous (Desirable)
* Experience of working within the defence or aerospace industry (desirable)
Intrinsic Factors
The candidate must have demonstrable relevant experience and proven success in their previous roles. The candidate must have well-rounded engineering experience in all phases of the design lifecycle, and must have previous significant exposure to all aspects of engineering planning.
