Job Summary
South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, with the support of the NHS in England, offers 2 years of training in CBT with University College London (UCL). In the second year, candidates will specialise in working with people presenting with Eating Disorders (for this post) or Personality Disorder or Psychosis & Bipolar Disorder. After training, provided the candidate passes the course and gains accreditation as a CBT Therapist with the British Association of Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP), they will progress to a qualified post as a band 7 Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
This role is a 2-year fixed-term appointment leading to a permanent Psychological Therapist post. The intensive training post will equip the post-holder to provide CBT to clients with complex problems, including eating disorders. The post-holder must work 4 days a week using the newly developed skills while attending training the other day. They must have experience of working with service users experiencing mental health problems and the skills to form effective therapeutic relationships. The post-holder will work with people of diverse backgrounds, using interpreters when necessary, and will attend 70-80 days of training at UCL over 2 years, including intensive teaching blocks.
Responsibilities include:
 * Provide low‑intensity CBT interventions under close clinical and professional supervision.
 * Accept referrals via agreed protocols and assess clients for suitability for CBT.
 * Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for clients.
 * Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary.
 * Adhere to activity contracts regarding client contacts and session numbers.
 * Attend multidisciplinary meetings regarding referrals or clients in treatment.
 * Complete data collection and keep coherent records of all clinical activity.
 * Maintain step‑up and step‑down arrangements within the stepped care approach.
 * Integrate issues surrounding work and employment into therapy.
 * Fulfil all training requirements and apply learning from the programme in practice.
 * Receive supervision from educational providers and maintain standards of practice.
 * Ensure confidentiality, professional development and keep up to date with new recommendations.
 * Participate in clinical/managerial supervision, performance reviews and conferences.
 * Contribute to best practice development within the service.
 * Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures relating to mental health and primary care services.

The Eating Disorder Outpatient Department is internationally renowned for evidence‑based psychological therapies for adults with eating disorders. The service offers low‑intensity and longer‑duration CBT, individually and in group formats, and hosts evidence‑based models such as FREED and MANTRA. It is based at Maudsley Hospital in Denmark Hill, with a mix of office‑based and remote working options.

Qualifications & Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
 * Recorded/registered qualification at graduate level in mental health or learning disability nursing, social work, counselling (accredited level), occupational therapy, arts therapy, medicine, psychology, or a UKCP‑registered psychological therapy discipline.
 * Evidence of meeting the Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSA) requirements of BABCP.
Essential Experience
 * Demonstrable experience in mental health services.
 * Experience in a service where agreed targets are in place demonstrating clinical outcomes.
Desirable Experience
 * Experience working with children or adults with eating disorders.
 * Experience working with diverse communities within a multicultural setting.
Knowledge (Essential)
 * Ability to manage own caseload and time.
 * Clear report writing and letter writing to referrers.
 * Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
 * Understanding of evidence‑based psychological therapies and their application to this post.
Desirable Knowledge
 * Ability to deliver psychological therapy in another locally relevant language.
Essential Skills
 * Understanding of a range of mental health difficulties and how they present in secondary care.
 * Ability to work under pressure.
