Job Description
Are you interested in working for an organization that values diversity and inclusion? The Environment Agency is committed to being an inclusive employer and providing equal opportunities for all. We welcome flexible working arrangements, including job sharing.
We are seeking a regulatory scientist to evaluate the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under UK REACH and CLP Regulations.
Within our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will:
1. Assess the reliability and relevance of ecotoxicity and environmental fate data in chemical dossiers to identify key regulatory endpoints.
2. Summarize and present findings from environmental studies, fate data, and model estimates.
3. Describe test methods, noting data limitations and uncertainties.
4. Determine appropriate environmental classifications under CLP and assess compliance with UK REACH information requirements.
5. Conduct quality assurance reviews and provide alternative interpretations when necessary.
6. Contribute to setting priorities and identify areas for further research.
7. Support test guideline development and initiatives for animal replacement methods.
8. Work within defined timelines to deliver high-quality outputs.
9. Collaborate with colleagues across teams and government agencies.
Incident response is integral to our work. You will be expected to participate in incident management and provide business continuity support, with training provided. This role may include additional payments.
The Chemicals Assessment Unit is part of the Research division within the Chief Scientist’s Group. We operate across multiple locations and support UK government agencies by assessing chemical hazards, proposing risk management actions, and collaborating internationally.
Required Experience and Skills
* A first degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, biology, environmental science).
* At least two years of practical experience assessing environmental effects or fate of chemicals, at a national or international level.
* Ability to analyze complex scientific data, identify key information, and follow guidance confidently.
* Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills to meet deadlines.
* Provide examples demonstrating experience in environmental hazard and risk assessment, particularly related to REACH and CLP regulations.
