Job Summary
Lead the highly specialised perfusion service across the Trust, ensuring safe, effective delivery of cardiac bypass support, equipment maintenance, and clinical oversight. Mentor, supervise and train staff, develop protocols, and contribute to multidisciplinary service improvement.
Responsibilities
* Take responsibility for the delivery of the perfusion service, delegating tasks appropriately.
* Demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge in clinical practice and supervise and train staff when required.
* Apply theories to inform practice, assist in developing strategies for patient management and care delivery.
* Set up, prime and run bypass equipment for cardiac surgery, following procedures, protocols, and participating fully in the routine cardiac surgery programme.
* Ensure quality control, calibration and maintenance of complex medical equipment for safe use during procedures.
* Assess patients for relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis to make clinical decisions concerning cannulation, equipment sizing and priming solutions.
* Administer drugs in accordance with local policy and clinical need (priming solutions, anticoagulants, anaesthetic agents, potassium, cardioplegic solution).
* Participate in a 24‑hour, 7‑day on‑call rota to cover all perfusion services.
* Deliver team objectives and projects, investigate complaints and incidents, and feed findings back to the Consultant Perfusionist.
* Lead protocol development, advise on service delivery issues, and engage in multidisciplinary team building.
* Adhere to team plans and policies, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement.
Personnel Requirements
* Act as a mentor and supervisor to trainees, providing feedback and support.
* Assist in recruitment and workforce cohesion.
* Promote reflective practice and facilitate training workshops.
* Provide specialist training to staff and students on techniques and clinical expertise.
* Lead effective delegation within the department team.
Immunisation Requirement
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from a UK occupational health provider or their GP.
