Computer Technician - Sandwich Placement (Fixed Term)
Be among the first 25 applicants. Fixed‑term: 1 year. Two positions available from August/September in the Departments of Chemistry and Earth Sciences. Exact start dates will be negotiated.
In the Department of Earth Sciences, research covers earth, environment and planetary sciences. Computer technology is central to modelling and analysing large datasets produced from instrumentation. In the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, IT supports research and teaching activities using a wide range of technologies.
We wish to appoint one trainee student per department to provide IT support to researchers, students and staff.
The Key Responsibilities of the Roles Include
* Share staffing the help desk with other team members: triage problems as they come in and assign them to the appropriate support queue or person.
* Perform first‑line support duties, chiefly but not exclusively on Linux, Windows and Mac platforms.
* Participate in the procurement, installation, configuration, decommissioning and disposal of desktop hardware.
* Manage user access to data and resources using the standard departmental tools.
* Develop scripts and code under guidance of senior technical members to improve delivery of IT services.
* Assist with installation, configuration and disposal of server hardware.
These Sandwich Student roles offer a great opportunity for a self‑starting student to gain valuable work experience in a team supporting a complex environment with real users. The major element of the role will be providing front‑line support. Training and support will be provided for learning technologies such as Python where appropriate.
