As a School Health Assistant (SHA) you will work within the School Nursing Service as part of a skill mix team.

SHA's support the delivery of integrated, evidence-based services for children and their families, with a focus on prevention, promotion, and early intervention.

You will mainly work in schools but may also work in other community facilities. The role is based in a variety of localities across BNSSG all working alongside School Nursing Teams and other members of the Public Health Nursing Service.

You will deliver Sirona's Public Health Nursing Service vision engaging with transformation programmes to support change. You will be required to work in partnership with children, young people, families, and schools to deliver a variety of evidence-based interventions that promote the health of children aged 5 to 19.

You will work as part of a team and may work alone with regular supervision, and there will be times when you may access additional support or provide additional support to colleagues.

The School Nursing service is an innovative and progressive service, and this role requires a flexible, warm and reflective practitioner committed to ongoing development of their skills and knowledge in order to maintain the excellent standards of the service.

The post is split across 2 localities, 21hrs per week with the North team based in Southmead, 7 hrs per week in the East team based in Barton Hill.

Main duties of the job

* Support the delivery of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP): arrange dates with schools, measure children's height and weight, and complete subsequent follow‑up in line with the national programme.
* Plan, organise, deliver, and evaluate health promotion activities, including any agreed local healthy‑weight pilots.
* Adopt a partnership approach with children, young people and families using a person‑centred, psycho‑social model of support and evidence‑based information to inform practice, employing a strength‑based approach.
* Demonstrate an understanding of trauma‑informed practice and how this relates to working in partnership with families.
* Maintain accurate and contemporaneous record‑keeping in line with local and national guidelines and policy.
* Support the local implementation of the Healthy Child Programme and specific public health programmes such as EBI programmes.
* Plan, deliver, and record allocated work and liaise with School Nurse Associates, School Nurses and other colleagues.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Qualifications and Credit Framework QCF/NVQ3 or equivalent in a related subject such as health and social care or childhood studies.
* English and Maths at GCSE Grade C or equivalent or Functional skills (English and Maths) Level 2.
* Evidence of a commitment to continuing professional development.


Experience & Skills

* Good communication and interpersonal skills in a range of situations.
* Ability to remain focussed on the child and child outcomes when working with families.
* Clear understanding of the safeguarding role of SHA within a universal service and multi‑agency context.
* Knowledge of child development at a level required for the role.
* Ability to work flexibly and adapt according to service and service user needs.
* Ability to work autonomously with periodic supervision.
* Experience of health promotion.
* Experience working in a similar community role.
* UK driver’s licence; access to a car; required to drive across BNSSG localities.
