About The Role
Be part of this ‘once in a generation’ project that will deliver clean energy to 6 million homes for the next 60 years. Sizewell C will see the creation of a 3.2 Gigawatt nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast to provide reliable low‑carbon electricity.
The Civil Works Alliance is an extended delivery enterprise involving Sizewell C and three international construction companies: Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics, and Laing O’Rourke. We coordinate across the alliance to ensure health, safety, and environmental (HSW) standards are met from design through to operational support.
Responsibilities
* Monitor and provide HSW input across design, implementation, and support phases, ensuring governance, compliance, and legal obligations are met.
* Undertake planned project inspections/tours as per the Frequency Matrix.
* Deliver pre‑work site inspections to evaluate and address potential risks at planning stages.
* Review, track, and trend unplanned events and support project/site management in completing investigations.
* Support local management in liaising with clients and contractors by attending meetings and working groups.
* Prepare written reports following site visits, inspections, audits, and investigations.
* Review and update project documentation.
* Ensure compliance with the BMS and test the effectiveness of its components to control risk and deliver continuous improvement.
* Ensure compliance with business emergency planning.
* Monitor emerging, new, and revised legislation to assess its impact on the business.
* Communicate lessons learned from monitoring/incidents and adopt them.
* Monitor specific environmental aspects and work with the HSW Manager to develop procedures ensuring ISO 14001 compliance.
* Deliver training and advisory sessions to personnel and contractors in conjunction with HR teams.
* Support the delivery of the Behavioural (Make Safety Personal – MSP) Programme.
* Share learning across projects and business streams.
* Promote the reporting of close calls and ensure actions are taken.
* Deliver safety cascades to inform projects of relevant safety alerts, fast facts, and lessons learnt.
* Promote telematics and safe driving behaviours.
* Assist in effective planning stages through compliance and reliability.
* Plan and monitor performance on SMART objectives.
* Communicate and promote a positive health and safety culture.
* Maintain the company’s Safety Management System (SMS – iSMS).
* Effectively communicate essential safety documents, e.g., safety alerts/bulletins.
* Undertake reviews of relevant safety documentation, e.g., work package plans/task briefings.
* Deliver site inductions.
* Undertake Q/A‑themed audits.
* Support machinery and workplace risk assessments.
* Gather evidence to support investigation processes and report findings.
* Deliver HSES coaching and mentoring to core and project teams.
* Work 42 hours per week.
Essential Qualifications
* NEBOSH Certificate / National Compliance & Risk Qualification equivalent.
* Competence in incident investigation.
* Demonstrable experience in a health and safety advisory role.
* Strong HSW legal knowledge and practical application.
* Experience delivering HSW training.
* Ability to influence and promote a positive safety culture.
* Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a risk‑free environment using best practices and innovations.
* Experience with vertical structures and RC frame construction.
* Proven track record delivering H&S support to multiple project teams.
Desirable Qualifications
* NEBOSH Diploma / NVQ Level 5 – Occupational Safety & Health.
* Personal Track Safety (PTS) competence.
* Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence.
* Environment / Sustainable qualification.
* CMIOSH or work towards it.
* Good understanding of CDM2015 – Roles and Responsibilities.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to build positive professional relationships at all levels.
* Internal Auditor qualification (ISO 18001, ISO 9001, or ISO 14001).
