This is a 0.95 WTE, 38-hour per week fixed-term post for 7 months, starting 1st September 2025, for a Specialty Registrar in General Surgery. An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to join and support the surgical team.
In addition to a general surgical commitment, the appointee will be encouraged to develop a special interest in colorectal surgery. Experience or exposure to laparoscopic surgery is advantageous.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Supporting outpatient and inpatient care of patients with general surgical problems referred by GPs and hospital colleagues.
2. Assisting the consultant surgeon in providing and developing specialist care in general surgery.
3. Managing emergency admissions on-call, supporting FY1 doctors, and consulting with on-call consultants as appropriate.
4. Supervising junior doctors and non-consultant medical staff.
5. Teaching junior doctors, medical students, and non-medical staff, in line with postgraduate guidelines.
6. Managing patients according to departmental and trust guidelines.
7. Undertaking audits and contributing to national audits.
8. Participating in professional development, appraisals, and clinical governance activities.

The post involves 12-14 programmed activities per week, including outpatient sessions, operating sessions, MDT meetings, ward rounds, administrative activities, and CPD activities. Flexibility is required to optimize theatre and clinic capacity.

Emergency on-call duties are on a 1:9 rota, supported by a team including a consultant, FY1, and other specialty surgeons. During on-call periods, elective commitments are typically canceled, but flexibility is expected for cancer referrals.
Urology services are provided by the urology team, with support from general surgery middle grades during nights and weekends. Vascular emergencies are managed through a network with Addenbrooke's Hospital, with in-patient care transferred accordingly.
The timetable will be finalized at the start of the post, with an expectation for flexible working based on demand.
