Consultant in Medical Oncology (Breast/Sarcoma)

Requiredto fill this new post within the Medical Oncology Department at St JamessUniversity Hospital.

Thisis a substantive 10 PA Medical Oncologist Consultant post with a specialinterest in Breast and Sarcoma cancers. The post will support established andexperienced multi-disciplinary non-surgical Oncology Breast and Sarcoma teams,and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital.

Therewill be opportunities to contribute to the central Leeds Breast MDT and SarcomaMDT, in addition to departmental meetings, teaching, research and servicedevelopments. This is an exciting time to join our Breast and Sarcoma servicesas we are currently looking at pathway redesigns and developing the servicesand the wider teams.

LeedsCancer Centre is one of the most prestigious oncology departments in the UK,providing an ideal infrastructure for high quality multidisciplinary cancerservices and ensuring the best outcomes for the catchment population of WestYorkshire and the Yorkshire Cancer Network.

LTHTis part of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), acollaborative of NHS hospital trusts from across West Yorkshire and Harrogateworking together to provide the best possible care for our patients. Bybringing together the wide range of skills and expertise across WYAAT, we areworking differently, innovating and driving forward change to deliver thehighest quality care.


Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be includedon the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview,if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.

Applicants should haveestablished skills in Medical Oncology and its related specialties including Breastcancer and Sarcoma cancer. A strong commitment to undergraduate andpostgraduate teaching, and a research interest, is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PAconsultant appointment for a Consultant Medical Oncologist, with a specialinterest in Breast and Sarcoma cancers. The post would be based at the LeedsCancer Centre, Bexley Wing, St James University Hospital.

The post holder willprovide non-surgical oncology treatments for patients with Breast cancer. Thesuccessful candidate will work alongside the non-surgical Oncology Breast teamwhich is led by Dr David Jackson and is supported by substantive consultants ProfessorChris Twelves, Professor Galina Velikova, Dr Emma Thomas, Dr Andrew Viggars,and by Specialty Doctors Dr Hira Yousuf and Dr Keren OConnor. The non-surgicaloncology Sarcoma service is supported by substantive medical oncologists ProfessorDan Stark and Dr Jane Hook, and by substantive clinical oncologists Dr RobTurner and Dr Fei Sun. The Breast and Sarcoma services are also both supportedby Clinical Nurse Specialists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, andPharmacists, in addition to Physiotherapists (where indicated).

The expectation is thatthe post holder will manage approximately 90 new patient referrals per year inthe Sarcoma service delivering approximately 90 new patient consultations and 800follow up consultations across 42 weeks of the year (as per job plan, oneclinic runs weekly and another runs alternate weeks). The post holder will manageapproximately 126 new patients per year (3 new patients and 5 follow ups perweek) in the Breast service.

As part of the Trustsresource commitment, the post holder will have access to secretarial assistanceas required, and will be supplied with adequate office space and IT equipmentto support fulfilling their job plan.

The Bexley Wing is one ofthe largest oncology facilities in the UK, within one of the largest acutegeneral hospitals in Europe. There are350 beds, day-care and out-patient facilities and a patient hotel. The BexleyWing incorporates services in non-surgical oncology, haematology, the AcademicUnit clinical offices and support areas and substantial services in cancersurgery. There is a dedicated Clinical Research Facility for patients inearly-phase clinical trials.

Clinical and MedicalOncology are based in the Bexley Wing, and run as an integrated service withina single bed base, and integrated site specialist teams. The service providescomprehensive non-surgical oncology services to the Trust and to the populationof West and the majority of North Yorkshire.They are key components of the Leeds Cancer Centre. There is a hub and spoke arrangement with thesurrounding cancer units in Airedale, Bradford, Dewsbury, Halifax, Harrogate,Huddersfield, Pontefract, Wakefield and York.This covers a population of approximately 2.7 million. In addition, there are other tertiaryreferrals from a more extensive catchment area from East Yorkshire, EastLancashire and North Yorkshire.

The Leeds radiotherapyservice treats over 7000 new patients a year with radiotherapy. The departmenthas twelve linear accelerators. There are three CT simulators and an MRIsimulator. The building houses a dedicated brachytherapy suite containing twotheatres. Shielded treatment rooms on the wards support unsealed sourcetherapy. There are dedicated clinical cancer research facilities with beds anda nursing research team. The links to the Academic Unit of Cancer Medicine arestrong and there are world class molecular oncology labs and researchprogrammes on site.

2.OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

2.1Todeliver care to patients with Breast and Sarcoma cancers at the Leeds CancerCentre, through:

Care of Breast cancer in-patients on a1:5 rota

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings for both the Breast and Sarcoma services

2.2To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.

2.3Towork with colleagues across medical oncology to deliver acute on call(currently 1 in 14). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acuteward rounds during normal working hours.

2.4To contribute to research, teaching,and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate andcontribute to the current clinical research programs on going in thedepartment.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MB BS (or equivalent).
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.


Experience

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Medical Oncology.
* Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in managing patients with Breast and Sarcoma cancers.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.


Audit, Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Requirements

* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* *Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* *Effective interpersonal skills.
* *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
* -Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* -Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
* -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview). Portfolio Pathway (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application.
* Attendance at recognised management course.


Training, Research & Teaching

* Should have completed a recognised training programme medical oncology or be within 6 months of CCT of a recognised training programme.
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
