Are you a dedicated, compassionate mental health professional committed to providing great care? We are creating Kent and Medway's first and only NHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for women, and are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist to help deliver this vital service. The start date for this post will be March 2026 to allow time for onboarding, induction, and training before the anticipated arrival of the first patient in April 2026.
All positions also benefit from a High Cost Area allowance.
Responsibilities
* Work within the MDT to ensure best practice for patient care, including both patient-focused tasks and staff-focused duties.
* Strategically influence the service by evaluating Allied Health Profession (AHP) effectiveness, identifying areas for improvement, and managing the roster and overseeing the budget.
* Engage in improvement projects and pursue continuous professional development.
* Collaborate with MDT members to contribute to a flexible and effective interdisciplinary approach to clinical care.
* Establish therapeutic relationships with service users and their relatives/carers.
* Assess capacity and obtain informed consent from service users; work within a legal framework with clients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
* Record, review and work within individual risk assessment and management plans in line with service and Trust policy.
* Provide specialist assessment of clients experiencing an acute episode of mental illness, analyze information to form an accurate diagnosis of impairments, strengths and capabilities, and formulate clinical needs.
* Involve service users in planning and prioritising their care plans where possible.
* Adapt practice to meet individual service user circumstances, including cultural and linguistic differences.
* Monitor, evaluate and modify therapy programmes to measure progress and improve outcomes.
* Identify clients’ needs for additional care provision, housing/specialist placement, further assessment, or referrals to other agencies.
* Act as a clinical reference for colleagues to improve service and care provision.
* Work in a demanding PICU environment, supporting medically complex and socially vulnerable women with a multidisciplinary team.
* Assist with training, team bonding, and preparation to ensure high-quality patient care from day one.
* Participate in ongoing professional development, bespoke training, and a comprehensive induction program.
Benefits and Location
* Salary includes High Cost Area Allowance: 5% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £1,303 per year and a maximum payment of £2,198 per year, paid monthly; the salary listed is inclusive of the allowance.
* Based at the Dartford unit.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Experienced Occupational Therapist with senior-level experience, capable of working within an MDT in a PICU setting.
