Job overview

To work flexibly within a dental team providing high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients across localities within the Dental Service, based at Birmingham Dental Hospital (BDH) and Community Dental Services (CDS) including Mobile Clinics and/or additional external sites as required.

Dental Nurses will be provided with a base clinic/department when appointed but will be expected to work flexibly across different sites where dental treatment is provided.

To provide chair side assistance to clinicians within the dental service plus arranging/supporting a clinician with any necessary domiciliary visits or visits to external sites.

To assist in screening, epidemiology, and research programmes.

To carry out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the clinic/department.


Main duties of the job

· Maintain a high standard of patient care and confidentiality within all dental clinics throughout the service.

· The Dental Service compromises of a wide range of locations, specialities and services, the post holder will be required to provide comprehensive chair side and administrative support to a clinician within all clinical sites across Dental services.

· To prepare and monitor patients for and during their dental treatment, providing pre and post operative instructions as required.

· To undertake the general care of the surgery including dental equipment/instruments (medical devices) and arrange any necessary repairs as required.

· To ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.

· To provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.

· To provide oral health education to patients as required by the clinician.

· To assist the Senior Dental Nurse in the smooth running of the Dental service.

· To support and assist clinicians including all student disciplines.

· To support and supervise all apprentice nurses, undergraduate groups.

Person specification


Qualifications / training

* A Dental Nurse qualification that enables registration with the General Dental Council i.e. NVQ Level 3, Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing or Dental Nursing National Certificate in Dental Nursing / Gained entry onto GDC register via grand-parenting (pre 2008)
* Registered with the General Dental Council


Experience

* Relevant experience working as part of a dental team, e.g. General Practice, Hospital, other Primary Dental Services / Community Dental Services experiencing chair side duties
* Experience of working with children, elderly, medically compromised patients, and patients with learning disabilities


Skills/knowledge

* To interact professionally with individuals
* Understand the principles of confidentiality
* Up to date knowledge in all areas of dental nursing
* Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative
* Organisational skills
* Good working knowledge of cross infection procedures
* Computer Skills
* Knowledge of dental procedures
* Other Languages
* Flexibility
* Ability to deal with emotional & challenging situations
* Ability to meet travel requirements of the role

In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.

Please note that the majority of non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Band 3 - 6) with the exception of those which appear on this list - link, will not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK.

All non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Bands 7 - 9) that meet the prescribed skill level (RQF 6) and salary threshold will be eligible for sponsorship.
