Role Title: Senior Radiological Consequences Analyst We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. We are now recruiting for a Senior Radiological Consequences Analyst to join our Radiological Consequences team, which performs radiological consequences analysis (RCA) of the RR-SMR design during faulted and accident conditions to substantiate the safety of the power station. About the Role: As a senior radiological consequences analyst, you will model radioactive releases during accident scenarios to define radiological exposure to workers and members of the public. You will provide technical leadership and supervision to junior analysts. Activities include: Engage with safety analysis, system design, performance analysis, and severe accident analysis areas to identify and scope candidate accident scenarios for RCA Work with chemistry teams to determine fundamental source terms relevant to accident scenarios Develop Source Term and Radionuclide Transport (STaRT) methodologies to model radionuclide behaviour and transport during accident scenarios Implement iodine chemistry models with support from accident chemistry specialists Apply software tools to calculate dispersion of atmospheric releases to onsite and offsite receptor locations Calculate radiological consequences, applying the ICRP radiological protection framework and considering Urgent Protective Actions (UPAs) Apply RR-SMR gated review processes to govern analysis work and solicit stakeholder feedback Produce quality technical reports following RR-SMR policies and processes Perform technical review of RCA tasks completed by other team members The RCA team uses methodologies ranging from Excel-based calculations to Python-based solvers. Atmospheric dispersion is modelled using ADMS and PACE software. Due to the safety-critical nature of the modelling we undertake, excellent quality-management processes including code verification and validation are essential. All analysts have a role in ensuring quality outputs through rigorous process adherence and supporting continuous improvement of methods and tools. We’ll Need You To: Lead RCA activities and supervise junior analysts Develop and implement RCA methodologies and tools Collaborate across engineering disciplines to define analysis requirements Deliver high-quality technical reports and reviews Ensure compliance with safety case and regulatory requirements Key Skills Required: Strong knowledge of radionuclide transport phenomena and analysis methods for design basis faults and severe accidents Experience performing public and worker dose assessments to support safety cases and emergency planning Familiarity with radiation protection principles and the ICRP framework; awareness of iodine treatment in RCA Skilled in developing analysis methods and tools, including Python-based solutions, for safety-critical applications Experience applying structured, methodical approaches to analysis and adhering to software quality assurance processes Knowledge of nuclear industry domain areas such as probabilistic safety assessment, design basis fault analysis, and emergency planning Proven ability to deliver analysis tasks to time, cost, and quality, with strong communication and leadership skills Degree-qualified in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science; working toward chartered status preferred. Location: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as your primary site: Derby, Manchester or Warrington. Salary and Package: The salary band for this will be between £48,000–£63,000 dependent on the skills, values, and knowledge you bring. There may be some flexibility with the starting salary in exceptional cases, and, in due course, there is the potential for you to develop the role further.
