This role has a starting salary of £40,296 per annum, based on a 36 hour working week. We are excited to be hiring a new LGV Technician to join our fantastic team, based in Reigate. As a LGV (large goods vehicle) Engineering Technician, you will be working as part of a developing team of support staff to the frontline crews at Surrey Fire and Rescue. You will be expected to carry out repairs and maintenance work to laid down standards, sometimes without direct supervision but will be an active team member to ensure that this requirement is always met. The working hours are on a rolling rota of 4 days per week, Monday to Friday from 07:30-17:00. (Week 1 Monday to Thursday, Week 2 Tuesday to Friday). During busy periods or where required you may work outside these times to ensure we maintain support to the front-line crews. The Engineering department within SF&RS work on a wide variety of vehicles, everything from the front-line appliances to boats and everything in between as well as a lot of specialist vehicles. About the Role As a LGV Technician, no two days are the same; you could be working on an appliance one day and the Jaws of Life the next. The day-to-day work is servicing and the repairs of our fleet which is approximately 200 vehicles and 18,000 pieces of equipment which is done at our workshop in Reigate. There is also a need for Technicians to be mobile to carry out safety inspections as well as repairs across the county. Because the nature of the work isn't just servicing and repairs (we also do a lot of manufacturing and modifications) engineering skills are also preferable. There may also be the opportunity in the future to become part of a team of on-call breakdown Technicians. They share a rota covering out of hours breakdowns and defects in support our entire fleet which can be challenging during busy periods such as major incidents. This is paid as overtime with an on-call allowance. Your main duties in the role of a LGV Engineering Technician will include but not be limited to: Servicing, maintaining, and repairing of all operational vehicles, fire pumps, ladders, cutting equipment and all specialist fire service equipment as specified by its manufacturer, DVSA and CFOA. This includes Fire appliances, hydraulic platforms, Unimog's, Land Rovers, vans, cars, water carriers, boats, and all associated equipment. Ensure SF&RS can operate a safe, legal, and reliable fleet of vehicles and equipment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Ensure all maintenance, and other records and associated paperwork is completed in good time, legibly and accurately in conjunction with the Administrative Support team. Shortlisting Criteria To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence: Educated to GCSE standard in English and Mathematics or equivalent. City and Guilds HGV Motor Vehicle Mechanics or equivalent IMI Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair - Heavy Vehicle Minimum Category B driving licence and flexibility to work out on the road independently. An ability to problem solve and to produce engineering solutions. Welding and engineering skills. A willingness to undertake training for working on specialist vehicles/equipment.
