Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Band 6 Sister to work in a busy Ophthalmology Unit.

The unit comprises of an Outpatients Clinic and Casualty Department and is open Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with occasional late finishes.

This Band 6 Management/Clinical Post in Ophthalmology requires delivering high-quality patient care across multiple sites, including the King's Treatment Centre, which is part of the main Hospital Trust. The role involves conducting nurse-led clinics, managing daily operations, ensuring safe staffing levels, and maintaining compliance with Trust policies. You will oversee staff development, liaise with landlords and maintenance teams, and collaborate with consultants and operational teams to optimize service delivery. The post is essential in providing efficient, patient-centred care while supporting the continuous improvement of ophthalmology services.

You must be a Level 1 Registered General Nurse preferably with ophthalmic or management experience.

You must also have the preparation of mentor's course or equivalent/ or be in the process of completing the course.


Main duties of the job

* Under take visual Acuities and the administer prescribed medication as per doctor’s instruction.
* Communicate regularly with patients and their relatives to promote and maintain understanding of progress and co-operation with treatment.
* Liaises with medical and paramedical staff and with other agencies, to ensure the timely delivery of patient care.
* Adapts to variations in the workload and emotional demands of the role.
* Pre-reads patient notes prior to clinic in order to identify any necessary interventions and plan workload accordingly.
* Carries out direct care interventions including ophthalmic nursing procedures and casualty triage, as required.
* Liaises with community nursing teams, Orthoptists, Opticians and other hospital teams, to ensure continuity of care.
* Prepares the clinical environment and assists with Intravitreal Injections and minor procedures as required.
* Oversee daily operations of ophthalmology units, ensuring smooth service delivery.
* Maintainsafe staffing levels for all clinics.
* Ensure compliance with Trust policies, including Health & Safety, Infection Control, and Data Protection.
* Supervise and support staff development, ensuring competencies are maintained.

Work closely with consultants and operational teams to optimize clinic capacity

* you will work closely with other Band 6 and 7 team members and act as a support to the management team
