Why this role is important for CPI’s work
CPI has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist / Senior Scientist with expertise in downstream processing (DSP) to join a growing team based at the Wilton Centre, Redcar. The role offers an exciting chance to contribute to research, development, and scale-up of processes across multiple market segments including biopharmaceuticals, food & feed, agritech, and healthcare.
As a Scientist / Senior Scientist – DSP, you will deliver technical projects, working across multidisciplinary teams including fermentation, microbiology, quality, operations, and engineering. The team also works on scale-down DSP models, continuous improvement, and identifying new technologies to enhance CPI’s DSP capabilities annually. You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge on multiple DSP technologies across a variety of projects, from laboratory scale-down development to demonstration scale at 10,000 L. The diversity of projects and bioproducts across markets ensures a variety of downstream processes, supporting our clients towards commercialization.

Key tasks in the role will include (but are not limited to):
* Building and maintaining a network of relevant internal stakeholders, representing yourself and the team as a credible professional in networks and groups (SS 2).
* Keeping up to date with developments in relevant areas and legislative/SHE changes, understanding and implementing new best practices, methods, or techniques.
* Supporting Business Development and Bid Proposal activities, contributing to proposal and project development, and engaging with customers (SS 2).
* Presenting and reporting experimental conclusions and data for internal review and client submission within agreed timelines and standards.
* Engaging in hazard and SRA studies as appropriate.
* Planning and executing experimental/pilot scale runs, analyzing and reporting results according to project and client requirements.
* Maintaining detailed records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, and software use.
* Agreeing on weekly work plans with managers and stakeholders, and delivering as scheduled.
* Ensuring equipment is maintained and calibrated for safety and efficiency.
* Maintaining a safe and healthy workplace through good housekeeping.
Senior Scientist
Key tasks include:
* Designing, developing, and scaling-up downstream processes for bio-based feedstocks and relevant analytical techniques.
* Developing, optimizing, and characterizing primary recovery/separation methods such as centrifugation, cell disruption, and filtration.
* Optimizing chromatography and tangential flow filtration techniques.
* Developing and scaling drying techniques like freeze, spray, and fluidized bed drying.
* Contributing to the continuous improvement of downstream processing expertise within the team.
* Performing experimental work and generating technical data at Wilton laboratories.
* Collaborating across laboratory, pilot, and demonstration facilities to deliver projects.
* Supporting the development of technical plans for R&D and commercial projects.
The person we are seeking
Scientist
It is essential that you are either educated to at least HNC / Foundation degree (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline with relevant industrial experience, or hold a Degree in one of these disciplines with relevant experience.
Experience in biotechnology sectors such as food & feed, agritech, healthcare, and biopharmaceuticals is required. You should also:
* Possess technical expertise in downstream processing and problem solving.
* Have process development and data analysis experience.
* Be skilled in techniques for biobased feedstock purification and protein analysis (e.g., centrifugation, filtration, chromatography, HPLC, SDS-PAGE, ELISA).
* Have theoretical and practical knowledge in Biochemistry, Biological Separation/Purification, Biochemical Engineering, and analytical techniques.
* Understand the biochemistry of various biological products including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and platform biochemicals.
* Have experience applying analysis techniques to these biological products.
* Experience with downstream processing at laboratory scale is essential.
* Knowledge of experimental design and statistics is beneficial.
Senior Scientist
Requirements include:
* Minimum of HNC / Foundation degree (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline with significant industry experience, or a Degree with extensive industry experience.
* Experience in sectors like food & feed, agritech, healthcare, and biopharmaceuticals.
* Proven expertise in downstream processing and complex problem solving.
* Experience leading technical development projects and fostering cross-team collaboration.
* Strong knowledge of biochemistry, separation, purification, and analytical techniques.
* Experience scaling downstream processes at lab and pilot/demonstration scales.
