Hibiscus Plc is family business based in the UK and is a leading provider of hazard warning labels, chemical labelling software, and DGSA training services. For over 40 years, the company has offered high-quality, regulated solutions for the chemical and hazardous goods industries, supported by exceptional industry expertise and customer service. Hibiscus is the only UK label printer performing its own BS5609 Section 3 tests, ensuring fully compliant labels capable of withstanding extreme conditions. The company also develops bespoke and ready-made solutions, including software for chemical classification, safety data sheet management, and labeling compliance.
The Head of Finance will take full ownership of the company’s finance function, running the accounts department day to day while directly managing staff and providing clear, timely financial insight to support business decisions.
This is a hands-on role within a well-established SME environment, combining financial control with commercial insight. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, producing robust monthly management accounts, and ensuring all VAT, PAYE, and statutory filings are completed correctly and on time.
Alongside core financial responsibilities, a key focus of the role will be to improve visibility of financial performance across the business, particularly around product and customer profitability, supporting more informed and commercially driven decision making.
You will work closely with the Managing Director and senior leadership team as a trusted and influential partner, identifying risks, trends, and opportunities, while helping to strengthen financial processes, reporting, and controls over time.
Key Responsibilities
* Run the accounts department and oversee all accounting activities
* Maintain and control sales, purchase, and nominal ledgers
* Prepare monthly management accounts including P&L, balance sheet, and cashflow
* Manage VAT returns, PAYE, and statutory compliance
* Preparation of payroll and liaise with external advisors where required
* Prepare budgets, forecasts, and cashflow projections
* Analyse financial performance and provide actionable insights
* Prepare year-end accounts and audits
* Improve financial controls, processes, and reporting systems
* Monitor stock, work-in-progress (WIP), and margin performance
Qualifications & Experience
* Strong experience in management accounting and financial control
* Proven ability to run an accounts function independently
* Solid understanding of UK VAT, PAYE, and compliance requirements
* Experience within amanufacturing SME environmentwould be highly beneficial
* Experience overseeing exports within a manufacturing SME.
* Understanding of stock control, costing, and margin analysis in a production setting is desirable
* Working knowledge ofSAP Business One (SAP B1)would be beneficial but training will be provided.
* High level of analytical ability with strong attention to detail
* Proficiency with accounting and financial management software
* Suitably qualified.
* Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline preferred.
* Previous experience as a Financial Controller, Accounts Manager, or senior finance role
* Participation in Quality and Environmental Standards including auditing processes.
