Job overview

The post holder will be the Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist for the Acute Stroke Specialty based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. They will play a key leadership role in delivering high-quality, person-centred care for patients on HASU and ASU inpatient wards. This may also include outreach to Stroke patients in the Emergency Department as well as Critical Care units.

They will be an established and collaborative member of the wider Stroke MDT, as well as the wider OUH Adult SLT Department, which includes other specialist workstreams including Acute General Medicine, Acute Neurosciences, Voice/ENT, Head and Neck Cancer, and Critical Care. In addition, working closely with SLTs across the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care System, in particular those SLTs working along the Stroke pathway.

The post holder will be responsible for leading service developments and innovation, which includes collaboration with the Adult Speech Therapy Service Manager and Head of Therapies to develop a weekend working system for Stroke in accordance with the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke () as well as Stroke SLT pathway innovation and development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to:

1. Utilize specialist clinical skills to independently assess, diagnose, prioritise and manage a specialist caseload of adults with acquired swallowing and communication disorders on the acute Stroke inpatient ward, including outreach to Stroke patients in other clinical areas, as well as utilisation of advanced skills instrumental swallow assessment
2. Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), actively participating in MDT meetings to support therapy planning and patient discharges.
3. Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives within the specialty and across the wider SLT Department as needed.
4. Maintain the day-to-day responsibility of planning, co-ordinating and delivering the service and providing line management to junior Speech and Language Therapists working within this service.
5. Take responsibility for providing clinical teaching and supervision to other healthcare professionals as required. This may include hosting students on practice placement, delivering ward based teaching and training, and supervision of junior colleagues and assistants.
6. Collaborate with SLTs across the Stroke pathway to ensure continuity of care. This includes SLT colleagues working at Oxford Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (OSRU) and Stroke Early Supported Discharge.
7. Provide necessary cover for the caseloads / workloads of other SLTs within the Trust during periods of annual leave / sick leave.
