Summary
Under the direction of a qualified therapist, to carry out both routine and non‑routine managed therapeutic treatment and activities in order to increase independence and confidence of clients referred to the Team.
To work in a progressively independent manner in assisting the therapists with assessments, treatments and discharges. To work in a sensitive and enabling way, taking account of the service’s commitment to diversity and equality. To observe client progress against treatment aims, goal plans within the team, and to report and discuss these observations with the therapist responsible for the treatment.
Responsibilities
1. Assist with assessments (including initial telephone assessments) under guidance of the qualified therapist and provide feedback on the client’s functioning and progress in self‑care, leisure, communication and physical abilities.
2. Work effectively as a member of the team to assist in planning and implementing care plans and treatment programmes, under the guidance of the occupational therapist, physiotherapist or speech and language therapist.
3. Form professional relationships with clients and communicate with them respecting their views, autonomy and culture.
4. Liaise with relatives, carers and other agencies to obtain or provide sensitive information relating to the client’s rehabilitation programme.
5. Under the direction of the qualified therapist provide a range of managed activities, instructing and guiding clients to support them in achieving identified goals.
6. Use clinical knowledge and life skills to build rapport with clients, engage and motivate participation in therapy.
7. Observe and analyse client reactions and participation in therapy; feed back to the therapist and adjust interventions as appropriate.
8. Advise on, deliver, test and fit specified equipment in the patient’s home as directed by the therapist.
9. Undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and effective running of the service.
10. Attend meetings about clients as appropriate.
11. Keep up‑to‑date and accurate clinical records, maintained in accordance with Trust and departmental standards.
Education and Supervision Responsibilities
1. Attend at least monthly supervision sessions with the senior Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist / Speech Therapist.
2. Be appraised within the performance review system, contribute to identification of training needs and develop a personal development plan.
3. Keep a record of learning from training and development activities and develop evidence of competence within the job.
4. Attend relevant courses or study days and share information gained with other staff within the service.
5. Provide advice and demonstrate activities to new or less experienced staff and assist the induction, training and education of students and other staff within the Intermediate Care Service.
Administrative Duties
1. Keep up‑to‑date registers of contact with clients and accurate information about activity.
2. Maintain confidentiality of client information and store clinical records appropriately as directed by the Team leader.
3. Report maintenance needs for equipment used within clinical work.
4. Undertake designated administrative duties as directed by the service manager (e.g., filing, faxing, reception work).
5. Attend service/team meetings as requested and participate in clinical governance, policy development and service improvement work.
General Responsibilities
1. Work in accordance with Whittington Health policies and guidelines, financial framework and approved national and local policy.
2. Adhere to Whittington Health Security Policy, ensuring no breaches of confidentiality.
3. Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.
4. Be responsible for continuing professional development and maintain personal and professional effectiveness.
Safeguarding Children and Adults
* Compliance with the Trust’s Safeguarding Children and Adults policies, procedures and protocols.
* Familiarity with London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for safeguarding welfare of children and young people.
* Familiarity with London Multi‑Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan‑London Procedures.
* Familiarity with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
* Knowledge of appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
* Participation in required training and supervision.
* Compliance with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct.
* Shared commitment to safeguarding all children and vulnerable adults.
