An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent position within the Infection Prevention and Control Service in Nottingham CityCare. The post is for a band 6 Nurse working 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate will join an established, highly motivated, and proactive team and will report directly to the IPC Nurses.

The team provides practical support and expertise to CityCare staff, patients, and independent contractors across a range of infection prevention and control issues. The role involves supporting the annual programme of work, including patient follow-up, swabbing, system-wide collaboration, outbreak support within care homes, audits, and training.

The ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills, be an ambassador for infection prevention and control, and have a keen interest in IPC. A professional registration is essential, and the candidate must possess a valid driving license and own a car.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate should have an interest in IPC and demonstrate knowledge of infection transmission. The role involves supporting staff and independent contractors, such as GPs and care homes, with IPC activities.

Excellent communication skills are vital. The ability to design and deliver presentations to diverse staff groups, manage sensitive situations with calmness, and communicate audit results effectively are key skills required for this role. Managing challenging conversations and ensuring engagement while promoting infection control practices are also essential.

IPC intersects with all patient pathway elements, requiring system-wide collaboration to ensure consistent advice and practice. The role includes surveillance of specific organisms and data analysis to implement IPC principles appropriately.

Occasionally, the post may involve deputising for the Clinical Nurse Specialist in IPC, writing reports, and presenting to groups, necessitating autonomous working capabilities.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

To provide practical support and expertise across a wide range of infection prevention and control issues, supporting the annual IPC programme and other quality and safety initiatives such as sign-up to safety, patient and public involvement, clinical audits, and governance.

To foster effective relationships with local infection prevention and control teams across the health economy.

A primary focus is supporting outbreak management and prevention in various care settings.

Dimensions

The post involves developing relationships with staff and contractors to ensure proper management of infection cases, sharing learning, and supporting day-to-day IPC workload management. It includes working closely with IPC Matrons to monitor service effectiveness and working autonomously as needed.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

1. Provide guidance by analyzing and presenting national quality and safety resources.
2. Evaluate and improve existing policies and guidelines.
3. Develop and support the implementation of infection prevention policies.
4. Monitor adherence and take corrective actions.
5. Review legislation and national guidance to inform practice.
6. Apply microbiological knowledge, including visiting patients and interpreting results.
7. Promote hand hygiene, management of invasive devices, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection control practices.

Data Analysis and Surveillance

1. Structure and analyze infection data to identify patterns and risks.
2. Communicate findings and implement improvements.

Incident and Outbreak Management

1. Assess information, establish responses, and involve relevant colleagues.
2. Communicate effectively and maintain records.
3. Produce final reports.

Quality and Safety Improvement

1. Identify areas for practice change via audits.
2. Develop and evaluate improvement programs.

Facilities and Environment

1. Advise on design and modification to prevent infection.
2. Review decontamination processes and ensure effectiveness.

Professional Development

1. Identify personal development needs.
2. Engage in learning opportunities and supervision.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration or equivalent.
* Post-registration study in health or infection control.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
* Degree or equivalent in a relevant field.


Experience

* Post-registration experience with relevant skills.
* Knowledge of infection control practices and audit experience.


Special Requirements

* Satisfactory occupational health clearance.
* Ability to work at a desk, lift equipment, and travel as needed.


Skills and Attributes

* Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and organizational skills.
* Knowledge of national legislation.
* Flexibility, self-motivation, conflict management, teamwork, and change management experience.
