Ward 6D is a 28-bedded respiratory ward in the new Royal building. Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, the Health Care Assistant assists the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of basic care for patients and their families/carers. As a Band 2 Health Care Assistant, duties include supporting the registered nursing teams in providing patient care, clinical duties such as assisting patients with extended personal hygiene needs, meeting patients' nutritional needs, completing risk assessments and implementing plans of care.
Responsibilities
* Assist the ward/department team under the supervision of a registered nurse.
* Support registered nursing teams in providing patient care.
* Assist patients with extended personal hygiene needs and toileting, ensuring privacy and dignity.
* Meet patients’ nutritional needs, including preparation and serving of meals, drinks and snacks.
* Provide and complete risk assessments and implement plans of care.
* Perform pressure area care and assist in prevention of pressure sore development.
* Support all individuals through effective communication.
* General bed making and making up of clean beds for new admissions and operational use, following ward/unit protocol.
* Clear vacated bed spaces and prepare them for use.
* Prepare used linen bags for collection by porters and maintain adequate supply of linen bags/skips.
* Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
* Collect blood products from the laboratory as required.
* Safely dispose of clinical waste and sharps in accordance with Trust policy.
* Familiarise with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents and report incidents if they occur.
* Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
* Support the nursing team in managing abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision.
* Assist in performing last offices and general observations of patients, reporting any untoward events to the registered nursing staff.
* Initiate Basic Life Support techniques and provide assistance to the registered nurse during prolonged resuscitation situations.
* Ensure due regard is given to patients’ customs, values and spiritual beliefs.
* Maintain and improve patient mobility using exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
* Assist with obtaining specimens for ward or laboratory testing.
* Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
