This role is associated with the proposed Universal destination in Bedford, UK. Successful candidates will spend time at the Universal Creative Headquarters in Orlando, and at the site in Bedford.
JOB SUMMARY
The Art Director is responsible for establishing and directing the overall visual appearance of all elements of an assigned project. The AD will ensure the project’s “story” and creative intent are conveyed visually to create the desired guest experience. They will direct all visual elements and artistic styles, creating, developing, and unifying the art and design to establish the creative vision. The Art Director translates moods, messages, concepts, and ideas into imagery, solidifies the vision, and resolves conflicting and inconsistent designs. They collaborate with the Creative Director, Show Producer, and project team to develop and direct the creative design to meet project objectives.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develops visual design direction and defines design elements affecting guest experience, including sketches, illustrations, models, composite imagery, and research documentation. Supervises others in developing these ideas.
* Oversees and directs design, fabrication, and installation of all on-stage project elements to ensure the creative intent is achieved, including architecture, scenic art, scenery, props, animation, show action, special effects, and lighting.
* Collaborates with internal talent and external vendors to execute the vision, directing art-related vendors and scenic scope as needed.
* Acts as design “vision-keeper” for the project, maintaining cohesive design throughout all phases.
* Creates and presents project materials to communicate concepts, content, and status.
* Works with the Show Producer to identify and procure necessary talent and resources.
* Acts as project liaison with partners, licensors, and intellectual property developers.
* Follows Environmental, Health & Safety policies and participates in related activities.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
* Manages supervisory responsibilities according to policies and laws.
* Handles non-routine situations, directing teams of writers, artists, scenic designers, etc.
* Influences decisions requiring tact and high-level judgment.
EDUCATION
* Associate’s degree in Theater, Art, Film, or Architecture is required; Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE
* 10+ years of production design experience, preferably in theme parks or related industries, or equivalent education and experience.
