Job summary We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated primarycare Ophthalmology Consultant required to cover medical Glaucoma and/orPaediatrics but willing tocover general Ophthalmology, as required by the department to join our dedicated and professionalmulti-disciplined ophthalmic team. You will be a highly valued member of the team bringingyour expertise and skills to a busy Ophthalmology department. Thepost will be complementary to the current sub-specialty interests of MedicalRetina, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Uveitis, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus andCornea. The service is supported by Specialist Doctors, SpecialtyDoctors, Orthoptists and Specialist Nurses. This is a consultant post at 1.0 WTE includingad hoc theatre session(s), outpatient clinics, admin and SPA. Part time positions will also be accepted.Thispost does have an on-call requirement: First on call one night a week 5-9pm andsecond on call 1:4 Weekends - 9am to 9pm. This is a very exciting time to join the Ophthalmology Department atBarnsley Hospital as the department has recently moved to the AlhambraOutpatients Department in the Barnsley town centre. The Trust plans tosignificantly invest in the redesign of the service over the next three yearsin order to deliver an efficient, patient-centred, one-stop service inpartnership with other local providers. Main duties of the job You will workas part of the Ophthalmology Department and are expected to provide a high-qualityservice and ensure excellent patient care. MainResponsibilities include: (a) Clinical Services: The appointed clinicianwill, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the planning,delivery and improvement of clinical care in Ophthalmology at the AlhambraOutpatients. Workclosely with the multidisciplinary teams to provide a high-quality Ophthalmologyservice. Advise clinical colleagueson matters within his/her sphere of experience. Liaise with other HealthCare Organisations, Social Services, General Practitioners, Voluntary Organisations and the Hospice as required. Keep services up-to-date and give directionto future developments. (b) Training and Education: Contributeto the teaching of other grades of staff,both within and outside the department,including medical staff,nurses, paramedical staffand scientific and technical staff. Person Specification Experience Essential Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients Evidence of a wide experience in Ophthalmology and UK experience Ability to run independent cataract lists Experience of supervision of Ophthalmology trainees Desirable Evidence of logical thinking and an ability to make clear and balanced decisions Demonstrate an understanding of the development needs of trainees and how these can be met Specific Job Requirements Essential Enthusiasm and the ability to work under pressure Caring attitude to patients Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, other staff and agencies Good interpersonal skills An understanding of the current NHS environment particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues Desirable Have a flexible approach to hours of work with notice Audit Essential Evidence of experience of and commitment to medical audit.
