Network Engineer
Inside IR35 – Hybrid
We’re seeking an experienced Network Engineer to join a leading organisation in Birmingham on a contract basis. You’ll be responsible for the design, support, and optimisation of a hybrid network infrastructure, covering both on-premise and cloud environments.
This role suits a hands-on networking professional with strong experience in enterprise networking, infrastructure troubleshooting, and network optimisation, with an awareness of security best practices rather than a pure security focus.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design, support, and maintain network infrastructure across on-premise and cloud environments.
2. Manage and optimise switching, routing, firewalls, and VPN technologies.
3. Troubleshoot complex network issues to ensure high availability and performance.
4. Support Windows Server environments from a networking perspective (DNS, DHCP, connectivity).
5. Assist with network-related aspects of vulnerability remediation and infrastructure hardening.
6. Implement and support endpoint connectivity and network policies, including integration with Microsoft Intune where required.
7. Monitor network performance, capacity, and reliability, proactively identifying improvements.
8. Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, and security teams on ongoing projects and upgrades.
9. Contribute to network documentation, standards, and best practices.
Key Skills & Experience
10. Proven experience as a Network Engineer in a medium to large enterprise environment.
11. Strong knowledge of core networking technologies: switching, routing, firewalls, VPNs, and load balancing.
12. Hands-on experience with network troubleshooting and performance optimisation.
13. Experience supporting hybrid infrastructures (on-prem and cloud).
14. Working knowledge of Windows Server networking components (DNS, DHCP, Active Directory connectivity).
15. Familiarity with network security principles and access control (not a dedicated security role).
16. Exposure to cloud networking (Azure, AWS, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
17. Experience working with endpoint connectivity and management tools such as Microsoft Intune is a plus.
18. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across technical teams.
