Job Summary
The BHP Clinician Scientist role is a full‑time, fixed‑term (up to April 2030) contract based at the University of Birmingham with a 10‑PA consultant‑level job plan. The post will combine clinical service at a Birmingham Health Partners NHS Trust with academic activity at the University, aiming to develop a career leading to a permanent clinical academic or NHS consultant contract.
Responsibilities
* Provide senior clinical service in a specialty area, working across all relevant clinical activities and participating in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities.
* Lead and conduct translational research, securing external intermediate fellowships (e.g., MRC Clinician Scientist, NIHR Advanced Fellowships) and publishing internationally excellent research.
* Supervise PhD students and other research staff, co‑author publications, and provide expert advice to external partners.
* Engage in public, policy, and national impact activities, contributing to the development of novel methodologies.
* Collaborate with the BHP Clinical Service Lead and the Managing Director to deliver and evolve an integrated clinical service.
Qualifications
* PhD, MD, or equivalent higher degree.
* Medical registration: Full GMC registration and eligibility for the specialist register or completion of UK certificate training (including evidence of higher specialty exams such as MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH, MRCOG, MRCPsych or equivalent).
* For non‑medical healthcare professionals: appropriate specialty registration and evidence of integrated clinical experience and governance competence.
* Demonstrated experience of a sustained applied, translational, or basic science research programme with a record of impact.

* Strong leadership and team‑building experience in multidisciplinary settings.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and professional relationships skills.
* Integrity, honesty, and a commitment to continuous professional development and clinical governance.
* Acceptable health record over the previous 2 years in accordance with University and Trust policy.
