Job Summary
We are looking for performance poets to compete at the Big Gay Poetry Night - Mamma Queer Special, an ABBA themed poetry slam taking place at the Night Owl in Digbeth, Birmingham on the 7th August 2025.
Job Description
We are challenging YOU to write poetry in response to some of ABBA'S greatest hits. Each successful applicant will be assigned an ABBA song to inspire the piece they will perform in our slam poetry competition at the Night Owl in Digbeth. The way you respond to the prompt is completely up to you - be that comedy, heartbreak or filth - just make it entertaining! And camp. Preferably.
We ENCOURAGE you to break the rules of slam. Should you want to bring instruments, props, or even outfit reveals - DO IT. Just make sure you stick to the five minute time limit - it's really annoying if you don't.
This application is for single performers only - we'd love to have more of you but we only have one mic, and we can't afford another one.
All eight performers will be granted free entry to the event. In true ABBA style we will accompany the poetry performances with dancing, drinking, games and more - you can dance, you can jive and, and have the time of your life, at the big gay poetry night mamma queer special.

The Big Gay Poetry Night is a pop-up poetry event aiming to celebrate queer contributions to the Birmingham art scene. Our event debuted at the Hare and Hounds as part of the Heath Bookshop Literature and Music Festival. We have hosted nights in pubs, art galleries, and even sold out the Birmingham Hippodrome. We encourage performers to have fun on and offstage, with our nights being equal parts poetry and party! Whack on some lippy, squeeze into some fishnets, and pop down to our next event!
