Pharmacy Technician - Band 5 Adult Assessment Unit

This role is a key part of the Pharmacy team on the Adult Assessment Unit and OPAL. Working with the Pharmacy and multidisciplinary team to provide an effective pharmacy service to patients on AAU and OPAL in line with local and national objectives, the Technician will act as an Accredited Checking Technician / Medicine Management Technician, completing clinical checks and counselling patients with their medicines. The role supports same day emergency care, transitions of care, dispensing accuracy checking duties and provides a 7‑day pharmacy service as per the agreed shift pattern.
Main duties of the job
Operating as a team member to deliver a clinical ward‑based pharmacy service.
* Prioritise work at ward level in collaboration with the dispensary to meet deadlines.
* Liaise daily with ward staff to determine new admissions.
* Visit new admissions, check for use and assess Patients Own Drugs, ensuring suitability for use.
* Ensure clinical validation of all charts, including new patients and newly written items.
* Transcribe inpatient, stock and one‑stop dispensed items, with pharmacist validation.
* Provide patient counselling on each new medication prescribed and discharge medication, referring to the pharmacist if necessary.
* Endorse drug charts against set criteria.
* Take part in drug history taking as per criteria.
* Liaise with ward staff/doctors regarding discharge planning, ensuring at least 14 days of Take‑Away (TTA) medication for discharge.
* Pre‑screen prescriptions clinically, providing feedback to the pharmacist on safety concerns.
* Maintain effective communication with clinical pharmacists regarding concerns and discrepancies.
* Assist in providing pharmaceutical information to other healthcare workers and patients, supporting seamless care.
Other duties
* Organise stock and non‑stock provision, including controlled drug supply.
* Assist in self‑medication schemes as needed.
* Assist and advise in the use of compliance aids.
* Undertake specific project/audit work as agreed by the Pharmacy Department.
* Write and update standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Maintain stock control and rotation on AAU, SDEC & OPAL.
* Follow all standard operating procedures accurately.
* Maintain a clean and tidy working environment.
* Maintain accurate manual and computer records.
* Perform housekeeping duties.
* Ensure disposal of pharmaceutical waste complies with SOPs.
* Assist in training pharmacy assistants, technical officers, student medical technical officers and trainee pharmacists.
* Refer problematic prescriptions to the appropriate staff when necessary.
* Carry out drug recall actions in accordance with SOPs.
* Adhere to professional and legal standards.
* All work will be checked by a pharmacist or designated staff as per SOPs.
* Contribute to SOP updates.
* Participate in ACPT checking rota to maintain checking numbers.

* Report all accidents, incidents and near misses.
* Handle hazardous chemicals (including cytotoxic drugs) following COSHH regulations.
* Attend all mandatory training.
Registration and professional development
* Register and maintain registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council and act in accordance with the code of ethics.
* Participate in continuing professional development (CPD), including further training and learning.

* Primary relationships with Pharmacy Department managers, assistant technical officers, clerical staff, multidisciplinary team including nurses and doctors, pre‑registration pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.
Physical demands
* Walk between departments within Pharmacy and across the hospital daily.
* May involve sitting or standing for extended periods, including at a computer screen.
Most challenging/difficult parts of the job
* Ensuring safe and legal systems of work are in operation at all times while providing a timely and customer‑focused service.

Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 and BTEC or equivalent qualification in Pharmaceutical Science.
* Have successfully completed one or both of the following: Regional Medicine Management Accreditation, NVQ A1 Assessor Award.
* Current registration as Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Experience
* Two years post‑qualification experience.
* Hospital pharmacy experience.
* Supervisory experience.
