At our GKN Global Technology Centre, we specialise in the research and development of the future of powered flight.

We have a new exciting and career defining opportunity for a Senior Research Engineer – Manufacturing, Assembly & Supply Chain – to join our growing Hydrogen Systems Engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the green revolution in aviation, a project that aligns with our company mission, “To be the most Trusted and Sustainable Partner in the Sky”.

Reporting to the Principal Research Engineer for Design, you will be responsible for managing a running BOM with a Plan for Every Part; defining the manufacturing build plans and supporting the deign development (in collaboration with supply chain specialists) for the best route to realisation.

This role will be based at our Bristol GTC, however travel will be expected including occasional international.

How You'll Contribute

This is a multi-discipline role responsible for leading the manufacturing definition and execution of the Cryogenic Power distribution system demonstrator. You will be expected to support the team with the development of the manufacturing engineering definitions aligned to product design using best practice in assembly, manufacturing and the capability of the identified supply chain.

The Senior Research Engineer will be responsible for the following:-

1. Working with the programme and engineering specialists help identify and plan the production & prototyping activities
2. Leveraging relationships within the team to ensure the BoM has a Plan for Every Part and that appropriate governance around MRL and manufacturing buy-in is undertaken to ensure smooth delivery of product for testing
3. Codifying the processes defined and developed within the programmes
4. Liaising with suppliers to capture their best manufacturing approach and influencing the design to support the programme needs
5. Using MBD to modernise the concurrent engineering lifecycle to be more Model Based Engineering compliant.

What You'll Bring

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential

6. Bachelor or Master Degree in relevant engineering discipline
7. At least 5 years of relevant experience gained within manufacturing, ME or technical supply chain development
8. Catia V5 conversant with PDLM Knowledge
9. Able to write manufacturing specifications, understand GD&T and detail drawings
10. Understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes
11. Experience in weights accountancy and mass balance calculations
12. Manipulation/generation of 3D/2D geometry models
13. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills including technical report writing.

Desirable

14. APQP level of Process control understanding
15. Experience in PO & contract writing/comprehension
16. BoM management and supplier data management experience
17. Familiarity with cryogenic design standards and processes
18. Experience in developing MBSE methodologies and Engineering tools
19. Practical hands on type with ability to be agile and dynamic as the situation requires.
