About the role
We're looking for an experienced and motivated Environmental Services Manager – Grounds Maintenance to lead the delivery of high‑quality environmental services across all our neighbourhoods.
This is a senior operational leadership role, responsible for managing a large, geographically dispersed workforce of over 50 colleagues and ensuring our grounds maintenance and wider environmental services are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard. You'll be accountable for driving performance across a wide geographical patch, ensuring consistency of service while responding to local needs.
You'll play a key role in shaping service delivery, managing contracts and service charges, embedding continuous improvement and leading a high‑performing, customer‑focused team.
Key responsibilities
Service delivery
* Lead and manage the delivery of environmental services across a wide geographical area, ensuring high standards of quality, customer focus and value for money.
* Provide visible, effective leadership to large operational teams, ensuring clear direction, engagement and accountability.
* Ensure operational performance targets and business objectives are achieved in line with agreed performance measures.
* Implement effective systems, controls and processes that support service delivery, continuous improvement and risk management.
Compliance and performance
* Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative requirements, including health and safety, across operational activities.
* Actively promote and maintain a safe working environment for colleagues, contractors and customers.
* Develop and use performance dashboards, reporting and management information, using data to evidence improvement and inform future investment decisions.
Service charges
* Work closely with finance colleagues to support the production of robust, transparent and value‑for‑money service charge costs for customers.
Customer service and customer voice
* Champion high‑quality customer service across the team.
* Build positive relationships with customers, actively listen to feedback and create opportunities for customers to influence service delivery and scrutinise performance.
* Support effective customer complaint management and resolution.
Neighbourhood Plus
* Support collaboration and the delivery of neighbourhood initiatives aligned to the Onward Difference.
Management, leadership and culture
* Act as a role model, embedding Onward's values, culture and approach to customer service within your team.
* Lead, motivate and develop a large workforce of 50+ colleagues, ensuring high levels of performance, engagement and accountability.

* Act as an ambassador for the organisation and an advocate for customers.

Skills, experience and knowledgeEssential
* Proven experience of managing the delivery of environmental services across a wide geographical patch.
* Demonstrable experience of leading large operational teams (50+ colleagues) to high levels of performance.
* Experience of working with and influencing external partners and contractors.
* Strong contract management, service management and budget management experience, including services of significant value.
* Experience of developing strategic and operational plans and successfully delivering against them.
* Ability to interpret complex data and use it to inform business decisions.
* Experience of proactively developing services and improving customer satisfaction.
* IT skills, including Microsoft Office to intermediate level.
Desirable
* Experience of managing and controlling invasive species.
* PA1/PA6 pesticides certification.
* Experience of playground management, biodiversity initiatives and estate improvements.
* Good horticultural knowledge to Level 3 or equivalent.
QualificationsEssential
* HND or equivalent qualification, or demonstrable experience, in a role‑related subject (for example: Environmental Services, Grounds Maintenance, Landscape Management or similar).
Desirable
* Qualification in a role‑related subject such as Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Biology, Waste Management or a related discipline.
