Junior Specialist Doctor (Higher) in Urology

Applications are invited for the Junior Specialist Doctor Higher (JSDH) post (ST3 level) within the Department of Urology at Sandwell & City Hospitals, Birmingham. The role is expected to commence on 8th June 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter until 2nd February 2027. This position is ideal for candidates who have completed core training and may have undertaken some specialist training, and who are looking to build a career in urology. The appointment is a fixed‑term contract at 40% working hours, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

Applicants should have substantial postgraduate experience, including at least 12 months in urology. Candidates must hold the MRCS qualification and be fully registered with the GMC. While this post is not formally recognised for training by the Postgraduate Dean, the successful candidate will work alongside trainees and benefit from a comparable training experience.

Main duties of the job

This department has a team of nine consultant urologists, six middle grade registrars, one junior specialist doctor (lower) and four Foundation Year 1 trainees. This team is complemented by two Advanced Nurse Practitioners, three McMillan Nurse Specialists and two nurse specialists. The department of urology provides full range of diagnostic facilities including multi‑para metric MRI, PET scanning, nuclear medicine imaging and trans‑perineal prostate biopsies. We provide all general urology care for adults and children. Being a partner of the Black Country Alliance, our nephrectomy services are at Rusell Hall Hospital and pelvic surgery is referred to the Royal Wolverhampton Hospital. We also work in close collaboration with the oncology team at the University Hospitals, Birmingham. The department runs regular general and specialist outpatients' clinics such as stone clinics, erectile dysfunction, and paediatric clinics. Full range of day case procedures and day case surgery is provided, besides inpatient facilities for more complex cases. With on‑site lithotripter, state of the art Moses laser technology, and complete facilities for endoscopic stone management, we are at the forefront of urinary tract stone management.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Basic medical qualification (eg.MBBS or equivalent)
* MRCS


Clinical Experience

* Significant relevant experience at ST1/2 or higher in Urology
* Recent experience in Urology


Personal Circumstances

* Residence within a reasonable distance of the Trust's Hospitals
* Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust's sites.


Other Requirements

* Full GMC Registration and licence to practise
* An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
* Appropriate Immigration Status (where appropriate)
* NHS experience


Professional and Multi-disciplinary team working:

* Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team


Management and Administrative Experience:

* Experience of conducting clinical audit
* Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision‑making
