We are seeking an enthusiastic and responsible postgraduate student to join our team as a Junior Dean, supporting the Dean and College community in maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment. About the Role The Junior Dean plays a key role in College life, acting as a first point of contact for student welfare and disciplinary matters, particularly outside normal working hours. This is a varied and rewarding position suited to someone who is calm under pressure, approachable, and able to exercise sound judgement. Working as part of a small team, you will provide overnight and weekend on-call cover during term, responding to incidents, supporting students, and liaising with College staff. We are seeking individuals who; are currently a DPhil student at Oxford with at least two years remaining Has strong interpersonal and communication skills Can remain calm and make sound decisions in challenging situations Demonstrates discretion, integrity, and professionalism Is confident in enforcing rules in a fair and respectful manner Works well independently and as part of a team The posts will start in October 2026 and Applicants must obtain the agreement of their academic supervisor that their research or other academic commitments can be combined with the demands of the post. Key Responsibilities Respond to disciplinary incidents, including noise complaints, events, and breaches of College regulations Act as a first point of contact for student welfare concerns, including emergencies Support students in accessing appropriate help and services Conduct regular checks of College spaces and events Liaise with College Officers, Welfare Teams, and Lodge staff Assist in maintaining a safe and respectful College environment Participate in welfare meetings and College life You will also assist with emergency situations, support security and lodge staff where needed, and contribute to fostering a positive student experience. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Essential criteria: Be registered for a DPhil course of study at the University of Oxford, with at least two years of study remaining and have successfully completed Transfer of Status. Be in good academic standing and have approval from their academic supervisor that they are able to combine their academic commitments with the demands of the post. Be eligible to work in the UK. Have excellent interpersonal and listening skills. Have the ability to gain respect and trust; Show discretion, have a high degree of personal responsibility, and act with integrity at all times, in line with the College’s Confidentiality Policy. Be able to exhibit personal initiative, work independently, and keep a clear head under pressure to take sound decisions in sensitive and challenging situations. Have excellent organisation skills. Be able to work flexibly and effectively across teams, liaising with members of the Jesus College discipline and welfare teams, as well as other relevant parties across the University community. Be discrete and able to handle sensitive information with the utmost confidentiality. Be confident in enforcing College rules and regulations in a firm and fair manner. Have good IT skills (email, maintain the online welfare log).
