Job Summary

The post holder will work as a registered clinical scientist, participating in the band 7 rotation of scientists entailing working approximately 0.4WTE in a dedicated section, 0.1 on general quality assurance and checking duties and 0.4WTE in one other section of radiotherapy physics on a 6 monthly basis. 0.1WTE is assigned to personal development and research and development outside of any allocated work making up part of the work plan.

The sections are Brachytherapy, Computing, Dosimetry, Treatment Planning and national trials quality assurance as part of the national Radiotherapy Trial Quality Assurance group (RTTQA). It is therefore expected that the post holder will develop specialist expertise in one area of the department and gain a broad understanding of all aspects of radiotherapy, rotating around each section every 2 years.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under the direction of a section manager and / or Medical Physics Expert to perform the full range of routine, implementation and development work associated with providing radiotherapy physics services to the cancer centre.

Radiotherapy Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy and physics departments for the treatment machines, CT simulators, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, the safe operation of equipment and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, their calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations.
