We’re now looking for a Head of Video to lead the Guardian’s award winning video team on a 12 month maternity cover contract. In this role you will manage the editorial video team, commissioning videos, reviewing output, and help shape and deliver the Guardian’s future video strategy.
The video team produces a wide range of editorial video content, including live streams, breaking news and explainer videos across our digital products and social channels, as well as the Guardian’s Oscar and Bafta winning documentaries.
About the Role
Oversee all video content, to include breaking news and explainers, bespoke videos for social platforms, news video, features and long-form documentaries,
Act as chief commissioning editor for video projects, ensuring that the Guardian's video output meets its high editorial standards, achieves its artistic & journalistic goals, and advances the Guardian’s reputation for innovation
Line manage senior video team members, and support them in managing their direct reports
Build and sustain close relationships with the Guardian newsroom. Act as advocate for video across the organisation, working with other editorial teams on joint projects
Deliver the Guardian’s video strategy, with direction from the Executive Editor, Multimedia and External Editorial Partnerships
Propose and develop original video stories
With direction from the executive editor, multimedia, lead the video team, including agreeing and delivering all audience growth targets, budget management and assignment and ensuring video content meets legal and ethical standards
Act as point person, with responsibility for final decision-making involving third party video content and co-productions
Ensure all currently available technical resources are used to realise video ideas as effectively and efficiently as possible, to the highest professional standards, and within budget
About You:
Strong, demonstrable experience & track record of success in video production and understanding of news video gained within a newsroom environment
Experience of web publishing
Strong and demonstrable creative background, including video production and digital editing
Experience of managing a video team and budget
Excellent understanding of the Guardian’s current video output, and the online video and film market in the UK and overseas as well as thorough understanding of the editorial aims and values of Guardian News & Media Ltd
Excellent awareness of the needs and interests of GNM’s audiences
Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
