Overview
The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) seeks to solve major global challenges through interdisciplinary science and technology. The Generative Biology Institute (GBI) at EIT aims to advance biology engineering, enabling precise genome synthesis and understanding DNA sequences that produce desired biological functions. GBI will host 30 groups and over 300 researchers, supported by cutting-edge facilities and sustained funding to address health, sustainability, agriculture, and related fields.
EIT fosters collaboration, innovation, and resilience, valuing diverse expertise to drive sustainable solutions.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert-level data analysis and interpretation for GBI researchers, from conceptualisation through manuscript preparation and submission
* Lead and contribute to collaborative analysis projects involving GBI researchers, staff, and external collaborators
* Develop and implement bioinformatics strategies, programs, and workflows that support GBI's experimental programmes (synthetic biology, genome design, molecular evolution)
* Collaborate with researchers and platform staff (e.g., sequencing, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry) to develop and refine computational pipelines for analysing biological data
* Ensure reproducibility, version control, and documentation for all analyses and pipelines, contributing to open science
* Organise and prioritise work to meet defined deadlines
* Ensure compliance with best practices in biological data handling and integrate data with laboratory and metadata
* Design and deliver high-quality training to GBI staff and researchers; mentor those working independently
* Support user engagement strategies, including user-group meetings, seminars, and chat systems
* Utilise strategic learning opportunities to maintain and develop expertise, contributing to group resilience
* Promote and champion EIT and GBI, representing the institute at functions and public events
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
* An advanced degree in a data-oriented subject (e.g., Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry)
* Extensive experience delivering client-facing bioinformatics analyses with publications or equivalent evidence across multiple areas (RNA- and DNA-based bulk / single cell / spatial, long-read sequencing, DNA conformation and accessibility, image analysis, proteomics, metabolomics, protein structure, high-dimension cytometry)
* Practical experience or thorough understanding of working in a laboratory or scientific research setting; strong knowledge of data types, limitations, and challenges across experimental workflows and relevant molecular biology techniques
* Expert-level programming skills (R and Python)
* Extensive experience operating in HPC and/or Cloud environments (e.g., SLURM, OCI); strong UNIX familiarity
* Experience designing and implementing analysis pipelines (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake), using software containers (Docker, Singularity/Apptainer)
* Demonstrable experience developing version-controlled code; familiarity with tools (git) and multi-user development practices
