Job Summary

Hywel Dda University Health Board's Ophthalmology Department delivers a high‑quality, comprehensive service to the communities of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion. This brand‑new post offers an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, forward‑thinking team committed to developing and expanding ophthalmic services across the Health Board. You will work closely with a supportive group of Ophthalmology Consultants and an experienced Management Team as we continue to enhance and modernise our service.

We are delighted to offer two permanent Specialty Doctor positions, based primarily at either Bronglais General Hospital or Glangwili General Hospital. Some cross‑site or off‑site working may be included as part of your agreed job plan. These posts are ideal for international candidates with substantial ophthalmology experience seeking their first UK role, as well as UK‑based doctors looking to build their career in one of the most beautiful regions of the country.


Our Medical Team Currently Includes

* 2 Locum Consultant Ophthalmologists
* 3 Consultant vacancies
* 3 visiting Consultants
* 10 Specialty Doctors in post
* 2 Specialty Doctor vacancies


Main duties of the job

As a Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology, you will be involved in a broad spectrum of clinical activity, including:

* Managing a wide range of ophthalmic conditions
* Performing high‑volume cataract surgery
* Delivering intravitreal therapy (IVT)
* Providing care within the emergency eye casualty service

You will play a key role in delivering ophthalmic care to both hospital and community patients, contributing to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of ophthalmic and related conditions.

The post includes participation in a 1:8 on‑call rota during weekdays and weekends, providing essential cover across the entire Health Board catchment area.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in‑hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

* 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
* Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Person Specification


Essential

Qualifications and Knowledge
* Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
* Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
Clinical Governance
* Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
Experience
* Shall have completed at least four years' full‑time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
* Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
Teaching
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
Other
* Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner
* Flexible approach to the needs of the service


Desirable

Qualifications and Knowledge
* Additional clinical qualification(s).
* Evidence of working towards membership of the Royal College.
Clinical Governance
* Knowledge of risk management.
* Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.
Experience
* NHS Experience.
* Able to demonstrate evidence of leading a team.
Teaching
* Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and resident doctors.
Other
* Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
