About the appointment

Appointment description

The Ministry of Defence is looking to appoint up to four medical members to IMEG with experience in one or more of the following areas: occupational health, neurology, management of chronic pain, primary care or women’s health issues in the military. The person will be independent of the Ministry of Defence and operational activities, consideration will be given to those who have previously worked for the MOD or have been a member of the Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence is looking to improve representation by people with protected characteristics, to better reflect our diverse population of serving men and women.

The overall role and responsibilities of the member are to:

* Engage fully in collective consideration of topics raised for investigation, taking account of the full range of the evidence base in science and medicine, also taking into account information issued by the sponsor department or the responsible Minister.
* Ensure that the Code of Practice on access to Government Information is adhered to.
* Ensure that the Group does not exceed its powers or functions.
* Accept that communications between the Group and Minister will generally be through the Chair, except where the Group has agreed that an individual member should act on its behalf. Nevertheless, any Group member has the right of access to Minister on any matter, which he or she believes raises important issues relating to his or her duties as a Group member. In such cases the agreement of the rest of the Group should be sought.

Person specification

Essential criteria

The successful candidate must be one of the following, an appropriately qualified and experienced:

* occupational health specialist
* neurologist or other specialist with significant experience working with those with chronic pain conditions.
* Primary care specialist with experience of Armed Forces or veteran issues
* Primary or secondary care specialist with experience of military women’s health issues.

They must demonstrate:

* a track record of substantial academic achievement, as evidenced by publications in the peer-reviewed medical literature, such as papers on original research and reviews, and book chapters in learned texts. 
* an ability to apply intellectual rigour to the cross-specialty medical and scientific aspects of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and related matters. 

Desirable criteria:

* Demonstrate an ability to contribute to investigative work by drafting evidence-based, referenced reviews of topics relevant to AFCS. 
* Demonstrate a track record of working collaboratively on high level committees at board level and be willing to work flexibly and engage constructively with the other members of IMEG and relevant stakeholders.  
* Have an interest in occupational medicine, disability analysis or personal injury compensation. 
* Have an understanding AFCS and how it operates and be familiar with IMEG’s published reports.

Eligibility criteria

Open to UK Nationals only.

In general, you should have the right to work in the UK to be eligible to apply for a public appointment.

There are a small number of specialist roles that are not open to non-British citizens. Any nationality requirements will be specified in the vacancy details.

The Government expects all holders of public office to work to the highest personal and professional standards.

Security clearance

The successful candidate will be required to undertake Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks in line with the Civil Service guidelines. Additional Security Clearance may also be required for certain roles. However, where this applies, candidates will be notified during the appointment process. The level of clearance required for this role is Security Check (SC).
