We are looking for a dedicated professional who wants to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people. As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will support Children Looked After (CLA) and vulnerable students including SEND in KS3 through to Post 16. This is a term-time only position based on 39 weeks, and a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Any successful internal candidate will be offered the position as a secondment and, in line with Section 8.1 of the Secondment Policy, must consult with their manager before applying. Search ‘secondment policy’ on the intranet for more information.

As you help our vulnerable cohorts work toward strong outcomes, in line with our high expectations, we will provide the support and training to help you thrive in your role.

About you...

We are looking for a tutor to teach Functional Skills (FS) Maths to Children Looked After (CLA) and vulnerable students including SEND in KS3 through to Post 16. Where desirable, you will also have the skills to teach FS English.

In addition, you will support post 16 Children Looked After and other vulnerable students, including SEND to work towards gaining Functional Skills qualifications in Maths or to improve grades to prevent NEET (not in education, employment or training) and improve life chances.

To be successful in this post, you will hold a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching with a specialist pathway in Mathematics (Numeracy) or will be able to demonstrate equivalent experience. You will also have experience supporting learners in a Secondary or Post‑16 setting and a proven knowledge of Maths Functional Skills programmes. Daytime availability for teaching is essential.

About the team...

The Virtual School works with a multi-disciplinary team including SEND, schools, colleges, businesses, universities, social workers, personal advisors, parents, guardians and foster carers to support children and young people through school and onto either further education, employment or training.

We are a team committed to empowering our children and young people to realise their potential. By helping you be your best, we strengthen our team and the impact we make.
