Offer description

We would like to recruit a Health Care Assistant with experience working in primary care to work within our practice based in Blundellsands. The role is part time, up to 30 hours per week over 3 or 4 days. The post has become available due to the partial retirement of our current HCA who will remain working within our team.

We are an experienced, cohesive nursing team that supports development within roles. We have regular nurse meetings and wider practice meetings, and the team is led by a Lead Nurse.


Job responsibilities

* Assist GPs and practice nurse team in the delivery of care for the practice population
* Support long‑term condition management and general clinic duties
* Deliver immunisations under national guidelines and practice policy
* Order stock, keep clinical rooms fully equipped and check emergency equipment
* Maintain vaccine stock and fridge temperature


Communication

* Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognizing their needs for alternative methods of communication
* Handle specific clinical communication situations
* Communicate effectively with other team members


Personal and people development

* Take responsibility for own developmental learning and performance, including participating in supervision
* Maintain a record of personal development
* Access appropriate training based on identified needs
* Understand the roles and responsibilities of individuals in the primary health care team
* Be aware of relevant legal issues
* Be familiar with changing structures of health care provision relevant to general practice


Health, safety and security

* Use and encourage familiarity with personal security systems in line with practice guidelines
* Identify and manage risks associated with work activities
* Adhere to infection control procedures and maintain cleanliness in each clinical room
* Apply the principles of the cold chain to vaccine storage and disposal
* Use the computer monitor safely


Service improvement

* Assist with current clinical audit when appropriate
* Collaborate on the development of new services and initiatives
* Provide health information leaflets upon request

* Alert team members to issues of quality and risk in patient care
* Ensure actions align with clinical governance systems
* Practice in accordance with agreed standards of care
* Facilitate patient access to appropriate professionals
* Ensure stock items are ordered and available in consulting rooms

* Perform and record diagnostic tests such as urinalysis, phlebotomy and routine physiological measurements (blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, BMI, venepuncture, oxygen saturation)
* Prepare and maintain environments and equipment for patient care
* Assist in health promotion activities (smoking, exercise, diet)
* Provide motivational support to patients for healthy living initiatives
* Administer influenza, pneumococcal, shingles, RSV vaccines under indirect supervision of a regulated professional
* Gain skills for basic life support and adrenaline if necessary


Information processes

* Record patient interactions accurately and promptly using computer systems
* Enter Read codes for effective information retrieval and auditing
* Maintain confidentiality of patient, staff and practice information
* Take precautions when transmitting information


Person specification – Experience

* Experience as a Health Care Assistant in primary care
* Understand concepts of accountability and confidence to take guidance from a registered clinician
* Experience of clinical skills including urinalysis, phlebotomy and observations
* Experience delivering immunisation programmes (flu, pneumonia, shingles)


Person specification – Qualifications

* Relevant health and safety or nursing qualifications (e.g. NVQ, BTEQ)

* Reliability and adaptability
* Good IT skills, experience of using EMIS

Salary

Depending on experience, the role pays in line with the Agenda for Change Band 3 rate.
