ROLE SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced and inspirational Head of Science to lead the Science faculty across the whole school from August 2026. This leadership role combines strategic oversight with hands-on teaching, offering the opportunity to shape Science education from the early years through to the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
The successful candidate will provide vision and direction for the Science department, ensuring excellent outcomes for students, fostering curiosity and critical thinking, and supporting colleagues in delivering high-quality teaching and learning across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the academic development of a thriving international school in Milan.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Science faculty across all age ranges.
* Support, coach, and develop staff to ensure consistently high standards of teaching and learning.
* Oversee curriculum planning, development, and review across PYP, MYP, and DP Science.
* Monitor student achievement and progress, ensuring effective use of assessment to inform learning.
* Promote innovation in Science teaching, including effective use of technology and inquiry-based learning.
* Teach a reduced timetable in your specialist area (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), including IB Diploma classes.
* Manage departmental resources, budgets, and laboratories effectively.
* Lead and contribute to whole-school initiatives, interdisciplinary projects, and professional development.
* Support co-curricular Science opportunities such as clubs, competitions, trips, and enrichment activities.
* Uphold the values of international-mindedness and the IB philosophy throughout the department’s work.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Essential
* A degree in a Science discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and a recognised teaching qualification.
* Significant experience teaching Science at secondary level, including examination classes.
* Experience of curriculum leadership and departmental management.
* Strong understanding of, or willingness to train in, the IB PYP, MYP, and DP frameworks.
* Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
* An EU passport or valid permit allowing work and residence in Italy.
Desirable
* Previous experience leading Science within an IB World School.
* Experience working in international or multicultural contexts.
* Track record of supporting professional development for staff.
* Enthusiasm for fostering student engagement through co-curricular Science initiatives.
