Biomedical Scientist – Hematology / Transfusion
Department: Hematology & Transfusion. Grade: Band 5/6. Contract: Permanent, full time 37.5 hours per week. Shift work mandatory. Site: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary & Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Job overview
We are looking for qualified Band 5/6 biomedical scientists to work across both sites, delivering clinical haematology and blood transfusion services to a population of over 400,000 patients.
Main duties
* Operate and maintain Siemens Hema analyzers and Werfen ACL TOPS coagulation analyzers.
* Conduct blood grouping using the Grifols Eflexis automated system and manage the Blood Track System – Haemonetics to ensure quality and safety of blood components.
* Deliver services during 24/7 rota following a period of training.
* Provide training and supervision to Medical Lab Assistants (MLAs) and assistant/associate practitioner grade staff.
* Support laboratory and clinical audits and participate in service development initiatives.
* Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.
Qualifications & Experience
* Accredited degree in Biomedical Science and a completed registration portfolio.
* State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Commitment to continued professional development with a personal development plan.
* Postgraduate qualification such as a Specialist Portfolio.
* Full training in all areas of Clinical Haematology & Transfusion.
* Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team and with laboratory computer systems.
* Willingness to provide out-of-hours service.
* Competence in handling sensitive data in accordance with departmental and Trust guidelines.
* Broad knowledge of laboratory practice in Clinical Haematology & Transfusion, specimen pathways, and reference laboratory tests.
* Experience training and supervising junior staff.
* Experience managing stock control systems, participating in laboratory and clinical audits, and contributing to service development.
* Ability to run, maintain and fault‑find laboratory equipment.
Communication & Relationships
* Willingness to comply with departmental dress code.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels of staff and with service users.
