We are delighted to offer the opportunity to join our Macmillan Colorectal Nursing team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). The post holder will have a key leadership role as a senior nurse within the team, providing support to patients throughout their cancer pathway.
This role requires the post holder to maintain professional standards at all times, act as a role model, and provide accessible professional leadership. The post holder will be expected to deliver education and training to colleagues relevant to the role, while also maintaining their own continuing professional development. The role will include management and strategic responsibilities, alongside report writing, data collection, audit activity and opportunities for service development.
Responsibilities
* Provide specialist colorectal nursing advice, offering support and education to patients, carers, nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Work in close collaboration with other healthcare professionals to develop, deliver and evaluate the colorectal service.
* Act as a professional role model in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Trust policies and relevant local and national guidelines.
* Be responsible for the effective management of patients urgently referred by GPs with suspected colorectal cancer, undertaking both telephone and face‑to‑face assessments to determine suitability for diagnostic investigations, including comprehensive history taking and physical assessment.
* Determine the appropriate next steps in the patient pathway based on presenting symptoms, and directly book relevant appointments and investigations using appropriate systems.
* Review investigation results and act upon them appropriately, in collaboration with medical colleagues.
* Liaise with and work alongside the established colorectal pathway navigator team to coordinate and optimise patient care.
* Promote evidence‑based practice within the speciality through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, and a commitment to nursing research and service improvement.
