Overview

The Christie Radiology Directorate is seeking to appoint substantive Consultant Radiologists with a special interest in Oncological Cross-Sectional Imaging. The appointee will be based at The Christie’s main site in Withington (home working may be accommodated) and will join a team of 27 Consultant Radiologists. The department handles 60,000 examinations per year across CT, MRI, Plain film, Ultrasound, Interventional radiology and Nuclear medicine, and provides reporting for the regional PET-CT service. There are close links with oncological and surgical teams and active participation in multidisciplinary meetings, research, and teaching. An interest in routine interventional radiology procedures can be supported.

The post holder will be an oncological radiologist with experience in all aspects of cancer imaging and expertise in CT, MRI, Ultrasound and PET imaging (training in PET CT available if required) and experience in chairing Cancer MDTs.


Main duties

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, inclusive of 2.5 SPA, and is a substantive post with an on-call commitment.

Applicants must be on or eligible for GMC specialist register for Radiology within 6 months of the interview date. The successful applicant(s) will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS. Main duties and responsibilities

There are 27 Consultant Radiologists, 6 Clinical Fellows and 5 Specialty Trainee doctors. The Radiology Service is supported by Directorate Operations Managers and a Governance Lead, with 3 Modality Leads and a PACS Manager. The Radiology department undertakes around 60,000 examinations annually and provides PET-CT reporting. The appointee will provide senior input to diagnostic imaging services and MDTs across tumour groups, with a shared office and PACS/CRIS/PC workstations. Secretarial support is shared.

Clinical

The appointee will be an oncological radiologist with experience in cancer imaging, body cross-sectional reporting (CT, MRI, US, ± PET CT), and chairing cancer MDTs. The department supports 23 disease-related MDTMs, with at least 2 MDT meetings expected from the post holder, and opportunities to develop subspecialty interests. MDT rotas are reviewed annually.

Supporting professional activities

The job plan includes all consultant professional duties, with 2.5 SPA for audit, CPD, teaching and research. SPA timing/location will be agreed with the Clinical Director and reviewed annually. Output for SPA should be accountable with evidence of outcomes.

On-call and emergency duties

The post holder will be on the on-call rota (currently 1:26). An on-call Specialist Trainee assists to limit routine hospital attendance; consultants are called in for simple interventions and complex CT reviews or MR of spinal cord compression.

Education and training

Active involvement with the North West School of Radiology, subspecialty training in Oncological Radiology, and teaching of medical students, SHO/FY2 and non-radiology registrars. The post holder will supervise trainees and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education as part of their SPA allocation. They will ensure junior staff and medical students receive appropriate support and advice and comply with GMC revalidation requirements.

Radiology and ST teaching

Teaching is approximately one hour per week per consultant, including small group tutorials and department meetings, with expectations to teach during general lists and to check scans.

Research and audit

Active R&D is supported. The post holder will be encouraged to develop research interests and support colleagues engaged in research. A partnership with the University of Manchester to develop the Manchester Cancer Research Centre is in place to enable translational research opportunities.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports GMC/royal college CPD requirements and provides time and financial support.

Job planning

The job plan may be altered by agreement with divisional leadership and is subject to annual review. Initial discussions are expected within the first six months of employment and aligned with annual cycles. The timetable below is indicative and may be adjusted. All new consultants are expected to have 0.25 SPA to support appraisal and supervision; this can be as appraiser or supervisor for medical staff or AHPs.

* MBBS or equivalent
* FRCR or equivalent
