Offer description

Let’s investigate safety. Let’s build together.

About us
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the independent regulator for work-related health and safety. Its purpose is to prevent workplace death, injury or ill health. To achieve this, HSE is responsible for setting the strategy, policy and legal framework for health and safety in Great Britain.

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, HSE worked closely with the Home Office and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government to support the Government’s Building Safety Programme. After the Building Safety Bill received Royal Assent in 2022, HSE formally established the Building Safety Regulator (BRS). The BRS exists to establish a more rigorous and robust regulatory framework for high-rise buildings in England.

We want to serve as a lasting tribute to those who have lost their lives due to poor and substandard structures. We will consign these instances to the past by providing oversight of the built environment, setting standards, offering advice to industry and Government, and overseeing work to drive increased competence of professions and trades working on buildings.

The role
As Senior Investigator, you will use different investigation methods to respond to and investigate building safety issues for High-Risk Buildings covered by the Building Safety Act 2022. You will support the Principal Building Safety Investigator in managing a team of specialists looking into various regulatory investigations and prosecutions.

Your key responsibilities and accountabilities include: ensuring the safety of the public when serious safety concerns are raised or identified; leading investigations and making sure material and evidence are gathered from a range of sources; making fair and effective decisions; monitoring and managing the delivery of investigations; conducting interviews with victims and witnesses; working with specialists across the built environment; and making sure material generated throughout the investigation process is retained, recorded, and reviewed in line with legislation.

About youWe’re looking for an experienced investigator, with a minimum level 6 qualification, who is either a member of a relevant professional body or willing to work towards one.

You should have experience in carrying out regulatory investigations in line with the Criminal Procedure Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA), be confident working with a range of stakeholders in public-facing services, and be able to deal with challenges and scrutiny while making effective decisions.

Your judgements could impact residents or companies, so you’ll need to be able to analyse information and make informed decisions, write clear, evidence-based reports (including for legal proceedings), and communicate with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity when delivering difficult messages to members of the public.

Benefits
We offer competitive salary bands that reflect your role and position within the Civil Service. And, as a Civil Service employee, you’ll receive a range of benefits, including 25 days’ annual leave (increasing to 30 days after five years), an excellent pension scheme, flexible working patterns, family-friendly policies including up to a full year of parental leave, interest-free season-ticket loans, and dedicated health, safety and wellbeing business partners.
