Radiology Department Assistant (Fixed Term)
To assist the clinical teams in the day‑to‑day running of the radiology departments at Ashford, St. Peters and Woking Hospitals.
Responsibilities
* Maintain an efficient daily work list and workflow of patients using Radiology IT systems to attend patients for appointments, request patients, add to diary, book appointments and make notes on the system.
* Prepare patients for diagnostic examinations and ensure correct patient identification, confidentiality and data protection.
* Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient or staff.
* Assist Radiologist, Specialist Sonographers, Cytology and Physiotherapists in interventional procedures in Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy: set up procedure trolley for guided injections, aspirations, biopsies and other procedures using an aseptic technique.
* Assist cytology during fine‑needle aspirations: prepare slides, assist during procedures and label slides to send to pathology.
* Monitor patients’ blood pressure, heart rate and saturation before CT procedures and post procedures and alert nursing staff of any concerns.
* Act appropriately in a crash call and understand the role to play in this situation.
* Ensure correct after‑care is given to the patient before leaving; complete post‑scan/procedure paperwork.
* Organise transportation of patients to and from examinations.
* Deal with upset and distressed patients in a positive and comforting manner.
* Maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient care with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
* Recognise and report suspicions of abuse to manager or safeguarding team.
* Respect all aspects of diversity in an inclusive manner.
* Adhere to the patient property policy; ensure belongings are not misplaced or lost and return them when found.
* Clean after a procedure and prepare the room for the next examination; cannulate patients for CT contrast examinations.
* Perform simple wound dressings and removal of peripheral cannula as routine clinical duties.
* Follow departmental protocols to maintain clinical practice and general housekeeping, including cleanliness of equipment and accessories.
* Follow policies and procedures designed to prevent hospital‑acquired and external infections.
* Fill out daily checklists to document the above activities.
* Clean ultrasound machines daily and clean filters each week.
* Ensure patient waiting areas and changing cubicles are clean, tidy and that gowns are available.
* Assist with the tidiness and promotion of cleanliness in all patient areas, equipment rooms and storerooms, taking care of furniture and equipment.
* Ensure beds and equipment are cleaned between patient use as per IPC guidelines.
* Adhere to IPC and Covid infection control guidelines.
* Reduce waste and use equipment and consumables prudently.
* Maintain compliance with all mandatory and statutory training.
* Support and assist with new staff training and induction when requested.
* Abide by the Trust’s uniform policy.
* Carry out any other duties reasonably fit within the broad scope of the role when requested by the Department Manager.
* Communicate patient arrivals to the clinical team and provide support before, during and after examinations.
* Answer the telephone in accordance with the Trust’s guidelines and refer calls to the appropriate member of the department.
* Communicate effectively with patients and relatives in a kind, courteous, sensitive and appropriate manner and refer to the appropriate member when required.
* Report any incidents, accidents, concerns, near‑misses or complaints to the appropriate person and complete the Datix form, if required.
* Build a good working relationship with the direct team, wider Radiology team and the rest of the trust team to offer best service and practice.
* Work cross‑site at the three departments (Chertsey, Ashford and Woking) and participate in a 7‑day service shift.
* Assist in maintaining correct levels of stock and required drugs for CT, Ultrasound, general X‑ray and fluoroscopy and ensure appropriate documentation is completed.
* Monitor quality of own work to ensure required standards of performance are met.
* Check attending patients on CRIS.
* Be familiar with and comply with all Trust and departmental policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
* Be aware of IRMER regulations and adhere to patient and staff safety.
* Participate in service improvement and audits when required.
* Work towards strategic goals; fully participate in one‑to‑one meetings and own PDR/appraisal process.
* Ensure continuing personal and professional development, taking ownership and accountability for staying up to date on emergency resuscitation techniques, manual handling and fire regulations.
* Attend appropriate mandatory training and support the implementation of the Trust diversity and inclusion strategy.
* Ensure behaviour and interests inside and outside of work do not conflict with the Trust position, duties and responsibilities.
