JOB SUMMARY / OVERALL PURPOSE OF ROLE

The role is for an “all‑round” engineer to work in post design support for military communications products. The company are specialist in marine and sub‑marine low and very‑low frequency communications and are a global leader in this specialist field. As a relatively small organisation, the engineer will be expected to be involved in almost all aspects of new product development and installed product support; from initial design, specification capture, assembly and testing, to in‑field support and potentially on‑site training of equipment operation.

The role will suit someone who likes to get involved in almost all aspects of a product and is not afraid to “muck‑in” when needed on other projects. The product base is high‑value, low volume electronic assemblies, specialist wiring harnesses, antennas, amplifiers and control units. Typically, the designs are high reliability, long service items (40‑years is not untypical), hence design to minimise obsolescence is a necessity.

Responsibilities/Duties

* Design and / or modified RF products for VLF/LF communications systems.
* Managing customer jobs from the design stage to production and shipping to the customer.
* Managing sub‑suppliers for products; purchasing, inspection, specification writing etc.
* Produce regular reports on general programme of activities, technical reports on issues being investigated and other product and/or project reports as required.
* Fault diagnosis of circuits; new assemblies or field returns.
* Liaising with other departments for test and calibration services where necessary.
* Where necessary liaising directly with customers for technical support, product development meetings and factory acceptance testing.
* Working with DMSG engineering change note procedure.
* Undertake technical training related activities as may be appropriate, either as the trainee or trainer.
* Comply with company health and safety regulations and policies, quality management systems and environmental policies.
* Undertake any associated duties as required by the Engineering Manager.
* Understanding of electronic and electrical design down to component level.
* Background in analogue design of low noise circuits (low frequency radio would be advantageous).
* PCB layout experience and assembly (directly or indirectly).
* Electrical testing of electronic circuits at both functional and component level.
* Fault finding to component and trace level on electronic printed circuit boards.
* Experience of working with mechanical drawings.
* Experience working with Engineering Change Request / Notice (ECR’s / ECN’s) systems.
* Experience dealing with sub‑suppliers of components, sub‑assemblies and mechanical services (machining and/or box‑build).
* Understanding of obsolescence issues and mitigation strategies for electronic circuits.
* Prepared to work across a range of disciplines as part of a small “hands‑on” team of engineers.
* Experienced working within an ISO 9001 design and manufacturing environment.
* Ability to achieve UK security clearance.
* Experience of designing wiring harnesses and switchgear.
* Requirements capture and specification writing.
* Hands on experience of making, assembling and building products.
* Experience of working with Defence Standards for components and materials.
* Experience working on military projects or marine designs for harsh environments.
* Experience of compliance requirements for harsh environments (shock, vibration, EMC, etc.).
* Comfortable working within a secure data environment.

Expected Qualifications/Experience

* Batchelors degree or higher in electronics or physical sciences discipline and relevant experience.
* 5+ years’ experience working in commercial or military product business.
* Full clean driving license.
