Project and Research Group A Postgraduate Research Trainee is sought for an ERC-funded project entitled SLEEPAWAY: Forgetting unwanted memories in sleep led by Professor Scott Cairney. The successful applicant will work on studies using a range of neuroimaging techniques (e.g., EEG, MEG and fMRI) to investigate the role of sleep in forgetting traumatic memories. They will join Professor Cairney’s lab and contribute to experimental design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. Experience of performing or analysing data from neuroimaging experiments (one or more of EEG, MEG or fMRI) is advantageous. Knowledge of research in the fields of memory, sleep and/or emotion regulation is also desirable. The role is expected to start on 1 st October 2025 although a later start may be possible. Role Working across the Department of Psychology and York Neuroimaging Centre, you will use a range of neuroimaging techniques to make new discoveries about sleep’s role in memory and forgetting. You will play a central role in the research team, contributing to data collection (including nap and overnight studies), analysis and interpretation, as well as the dissemination of findings through journal articles and conference presentations. Collaborating with internal and external partners, you will support joint research projects on related topics and contribute to public engagement in that research. You will take responsibility for the day-to- day management of the lab through relevant administrative duties such as organising meetings and workshops, monitoring budgets and stock control, and developing promotional and educational materials fo outreach events. Skills, Experience and Qualifications needed A postgraduate degree (e.g., MSc) in Psychology, Neuroscience or a related subject (or near completion). Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies that are relevant to the project’s objectives. Experience of working in a research setting (e.g., psychology laboratory). Excellent written communication skills in order to contribute effectively to the production of research reports and publications. High level oral communication skills to enable the effective presentation of research progress and outcomes to key stakeholders. Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative.
