Advanced Pharmacist for Medicines Guidance

Role overview

The post holder will lead and deliver medicines guidance for the Pharmacy/Prescribing directorate across NHS Lanarkshire. This includes providing expert professional and highly specialised advice relating to medicines, involvement in local and regional formulary processes, ensuring medicines are appropriate for use by all prescribers, continuing to support and develop the Scriptswitch process, and developing and maintaining a clinical guidelines process across Lanarkshire. The post holder will provide leadership to pharmacists and technicians across the health board on medicines issues, and represent the health board in national formulary groups and strategic NHS Lanarkshire meetings.


Responsibilities

* Work closely with the central team on the clinical and cost-effective use of medicines across Lanarkshire.
* Promote safe, effective and cost-effective use of medicines by monitoring formulary compliance in primary and secondary care.
* Contribute to development and implementation of evidence-based drug treatment guidelines for specific diseases.
* Collaborate with senior pharmacists across primary and secondary care and with other healthcare professionals on medicines and medicines policies.
* Prepare reports for ADTC and other NHS Lanarkshire-wide groups to aid discussions on use of medicines across Lanarkshire.
* Use financial, pharmacy and critical appraisal skills to promote appropriate, cost-effective and evidence-based medicines, and advise when information/evidence is lacking.
* Initiate and manage meetings with prescribers and healthcare professionals for formulary and medicines management decisions.
* Provide prescribing and pharmaceutical input to GP practices and associated care homes as needed to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness in line with guidelines.


What we’re looking for: qualifications and experience

* Masters degree in Pharmacy.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (including pre-registration and competency assessment).
* Relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent specialist knowledge and experience.
* Post-registration experience as a pharmacist with experience in hospital and community settings.
* Evidence of service development and capability to negotiate and influence multidisciplinary teams.
* Evidence of continuing professional development and highly specialised clinical pharmacy knowledge, skills and judgement.
* Strong negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills with healthcare professionals, managers, patients and carers.
* IT and analytical skills; ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team; good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
* Valid driving licence.

Note: driving licence must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.


Desirable additional qualifications

* RPSGB registration.
* Project management experience for projects of varying size and complexity.
* Working knowledge of GP clinical computer systems and prescribing data (e.g., PRISMS/PIS).
* Experience of working with Primary Care practitioners and in multidisciplinary environments.
* Knowledge of medicines legislation and guidance; broad pharmacy practice knowledge; management experience through CPD.


Contract and location

* Fixed Term or Secondment for 18 months; part-time, 22.2 hours per week. Salary pro-rata.
* This is a part-time post; salary is pro-rata.
* Fixed term post for 18 months; if applying as a current NHS Lanarkshire employee, ensure written line-manager approval for secondment.
* Location: Pharmacy within Kirklands - NHSL Headquarters.
